In Boston, you can get 315 square feet for $1,500 a month, according to a RentCafe.com report published August 1. Boston ranks 98th among the country’s largest cities, just behind Manhattan and Brooklyn, NY
In Boston itself, the median rent for a one-bedroom apartment was $2,705 in August, making Boston the fourth most expensive rental market in the country, according to an analysis by ApartmentAdvisor. The median rent for a studio apartment was $2,390.
In Wichita, Kansas, the largest city, you can get 1,359 square feet, or about $1.10 per square foot. (In Boston, it’s $4.76.) Other large cities offering more than 1,000 square feet for $1,500 a month include Indianapolis, Greensboro, North Carolina, Kansas City, Missouri, Columbus, Ohio, and St. Louis.

According to the report, the average apartment space a renter can get across the country for $1,500 is 729 square feet.
The apartment search website used a price per square foot derived from average rents and average apartment size by city from data from Yardi Matrix, according to the report’s methodology. Yardi Matrix is a national real estate data and research company. The analysis includes 200 of the largest cities in the United States, those with a population of more than 225,000 residents.
The report finds that renters on fixed budgets in the major coastal job centers have to sacrifice their housing for the opportunities these areas offer.
In Providence, New England, $1,500 will get you 200 square meters more than in Boston. In Worcester, you get 328 square meters more, and in Springfield, you get 433 square meters more:
