Guardians place starting pitcher Alex Cobb on the 15-day injured list

The Cleveland Guardians are halfway through a six-game road trip after losing a three-game series to the Milwaukee Brewers.

On Monday, the team announced three roster changes ahead of its three-game series against the New York Yankees, who currently have the best record in the American League.

All three roster changes affect the team’s pitching staff, which will face a Yankees team that leads the MLB in walks, on-base percentage and OPS.

The 36-year-old starting pitcher was placed on the 15-day injured list due to a broken nail in his throwing hand. In two starts with Cleveland since being signed at the trade deadline, Cobb is 1-1 with a 4.35 ERA, four strikeouts and three walks in 10.1 innings pitched, throwing 100 of his 162 pitches for strikes.

After surgery on his left hip, he was on the injured list at the beginning of the season and made seven rehab appearances in the minor leagues before being traded to Cleveland on August 9.

This year, the 34-year-old left-hander made one appearance as a relief pitcher for the Guardians against the Arizona Diamondbacks on August 7. He pitched 1.1 innings, allowed two hits, two earned runs, one walk and threw one strikeout.

In 36 relief appearances at Triple-A Columbus, he went 5-4 with a 3.46 ERA, 55 strikeouts and 25 walks, converting 10 of his 14 save opportunities.

The 28-year-old left-hander had been on the 15-day injured list for just over a month due to left shoulder inflammation. On July 30, he was sent to Triple-A Columbus for a rehab assignment, where he allowed five hits, four earned runs and two walks and threw just one strikeout in four games.
