Waterloo station is shut down due to “intruders on the tracks”, causing huge crowds to gather in the terminals

Waterloo station came to a standstill after intruders on the tracks caused trains to stop.

After several trains were significantly delayed or cancelled this evening, huge crowds of people waited at the station’s noticeboards.

Network Rail said it had experienced “serious disruption” to operations at the London station due to the fallout from an earlier trespassing incident between Raynes Park and Surbiton.

The routes have now been reopened, but since a large number of trains and their staff have been relocated, the railway company expects the disruption to last until the end of the day.

The company added that it was “working hard to get customers home” but advised passengers to seek alternative travel arrangements where possible.

Trains running between Wimbledon and Surbiton may still be cancelled, delayed by up to 90 minutes or diverted.

Journeys between Richmond and Willesden Junction may also be cancelled or modified after a fire alongside the tracks between Gunnersbury and South Acton led to the closure of all lines.

South Western Railway advised its customers to use alternative providers for their journeys and confirmed that the tickets could also be used on other services.

A Network Rail spokesman said: “Following a previous incident of trespass between Raynes Park and Surbiton, there is significant disruption to services to and from London Waterloo.”

“The routes have been reopened, but due to the relocation of trains and their staff, service disruptions are expected until the end of the day.”

“We are working closely with our colleagues at South Western Railway to resume services, but passengers are advised to seek alternative travel arrangements where possible.”

“We are incredibly sorry to all passengers who have been impacted by the disruption to their travel itinerary and we thank them for their continued patience and understanding during this time.”
