The Salvation Army in Canandaigua is urgently appealing for donations from the public as its food bank is struggling to keep its shelves stocked due to rising demand and uncertain funding.
This summer saw a 45 percent increase in new clients seeking help, leading to what authorities call “crisis mode” for the pantry. Rising food prices and a cut in funding from Foodlink, a key supplier, have put additional strain on resources.
To meet the growing need, The Salvation Army is asking for donations of essential items such as protein, cereal, juice and hygiene products.
The Salvation Army posted the following in an update on Facebook:
Update: Seven people came to us this week with substantial food donations. We also went grocery shopping and were able to slowly reach the finish line this week. Thanks to you, we were able to feed many individuals and families. We have a food order coming in on Monday that will help us out. But honestly, if anyone is able to organize a food drive or something like that at your workplace/neighborhood/etc, that would be super helpful. Just FYI, we feed well over 300 people a month. Funds are running low and the need continues to grow. Any help is greatly appreciated.
Original: Friends, we urgently need food and hygiene products that you can bring us! Can you help? Come by Saltonstall St. 110. Anytime between 8:30 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. We can’t do it without you!
