Venezuelans lament post-election unrest at a rally in Bayfront Park – WSVN 7News | Miami News, Weather, Sports

MIAMI (WSVN) – Venezuelans from South Florida gathered in downtown Miami to speak out about the crisis in their country.

Protesters gathered at Bayfront Park on Saturday afternoon said they were demanding that the United States put more pressure on Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro to release vote tallies to bolster his claim of victory in last month’s presidential election.

Maduro claims he beat opposition candidate Edmundo González, but the opposition said it had received vote counts showing it had won by a large margin.

Venezuelans in South Florida, like protester Paola Araujo, want Maduro to accept these results.

“My life was in danger in Venezuela, but I am still here fighting for Venezuela, fighting for the truth,” Araujo said. “The truth is that Venezuela is free now and thank God we have a new president. We are just waiting for the transition and for Maduro to leave.”

The US government recognized González as the election winner.
