Due to growing population, Bryan-College Station is looking for more public safety employees

BRYAN-COLLEGE STATION, Texas (KBTX) – Bryan and College Station city governments want to train and hire more first responders to protect and support the community.

The Bryan Police Department (BPD) is looking for more officers to help in the community’s patrol zones, said AJ Gonzales, BPD chief recruiter. The additional personnel are especially needed as students return to the city for the upcoming school year.

“Our call volume can be a little overwhelming sometimes,” Gonzales revealed. “Especially on those Friday and Saturday nights, all those weekends when people are calling about noise pollution or maybe they have a neighbor who’s partying… The calls can be a little overwhelming.”

The City of Bryan is seeking applicants for fire and police positions. In a Facebook post, the city encouraged people to apply for open positions even if they do not have the required experience or qualifications, and stated that it will provide applicants with the necessary training.

“When you come to our academy, you will be trained the way we want you to be trained,” Gonzales said. “For the job you will be doing with us.”

The city of College Station is looking for firefighters and paramedics.

The department supports the community through firefighting, emergency medical care and special operations.

Stuart Marrs of the College Station Fire Department (CSFD) told KBTX that the job titles of firefighter and paramedic are reserved for those who have qualifications and training in both fields.

Not only is the department looking for applicants who meet all the required qualifications, Marrs said, the fire department is also looking for applicants who care about the community as much as those already employed by the department.

“We’re looking for people who are motivated to work in public service, and we’re looking for people who want to spend their time helping others, because that’s what we do,” Marrs added. “When you have to call 9-1-1, it might be the worst day of your life, and we’re coming to help and make things better… So we want people who are motivated to do that kind of work.”
