A Manhattan woman admitted to pushing another woman into an oncoming train in Times Square, prosecutors said Thursday.
On August 8, 32-year-old Anthonia Egegbara pleaded guilty to assault for pushing the 42-year-old victim onto the tracks in an unprovoked attack in October 2021.
According to court documents, on October 4, 2021, at 8:06 a.m., the victim was waiting on the platform of the northbound 1/2/3 Times Square – 42nd Street subway station. As the train pulled into the station, Egegbara, who was sitting on a nearby bench, stood up, walked over to the victim and pushed him onto the train. Egegbara then fled the station.
Witnesses on the platform called 911 and the victim was taken to a nearby hospital where he remained for several days. He suffered a broken arm that required surgery, bleeding from his leg, and bleeding and bruising to his face. The victim has since received continued medical treatment to treat lingering injuries that affect his ability to lift and grasp objects.
Egegbara was taken into custody the following day.
“Today, Anthonia Egegbara was held accountable for shoving a stranger into an oncoming train during the morning rush hour, a completely unprovoked attack,” said District Attorney Bragg. “As a result of this brutal act, the victim suffered serious physical injuries that were fortunately not fatal. Our transit system should be a safe environment for all Manhattanites, and we will continue to prosecute those who endanger the safety of its riders, passengers and workers.”
Egegbara is scheduled to appear in court again on September 19 and will be sentenced to 12 years in state prison, followed by five years probation.
