Kansas students hear from NASA astronauts on board the station

Students from Topeka, Kansas, will have the opportunity to answer recorded questions from NASA astronauts Matthew Dominick and Tracy C. Dyson aboard the International Space Station on Wednesday, August 21.

The 20-minute space-to-Earth call featuring students from Mose J. Whitson Elementary, Most Pure Heart Catholic School and Aviation Explorers Post 8 will stream live on NASA+, NASA Television, the NASA app and the agency’s website at 10:30 a.m. EDT on Aug. 21. Learn how to stream NASA TV across multiple platforms, including social media.

Media wishing to cover the event must register by contacting Aaron Gray at [email protected] or 785-295-2900 no later than 5:00 p.m. Monday, August 19.

In preparation for the event, students from Whitson Elementary School and high school members of Aviation Explorers Post 8 joined together for a tour of the local airport’s control tower and a pre-flight inspection demonstration. The Lawrence Amateur Astronomy Club, graduate students from the University of Kansas, and other astronomy enthusiasts provided presentations for the Whitson Starry Night Astronomy Title I family night. On the day of the event, more than five schools from across the community will be connected.

For more than 23 years, astronauts have lived and worked continuously on board the space station, testing technologies, conducting scientific research, and developing skills needed to explore more distant areas of space. Astronauts on board the orbiting laboratory communicate 24 hours a day with NASA’s Mission Control Center in Houston via the SCaN (Space Communications and Navigation) Near Space Network.

Important research and technology investigations that take place aboard the International Space Station benefit people on Earth and lay the groundwork for other agency missions. As part of NASA’s Artemis campaign, the agency will send astronauts to the Moon to prepare for future human exploration of Mars. They will inspire the Artemis generation of explorers and ensure that the United States remains a leader in space exploration and discovery.
