Seaboard Station gets new entertainment with arcade games and bowling

The fun continues for Seaboard Station in downtown Raleigh. This week we learned that Pins Mechanical Co. will join the dynamic mix in Seaboard Station with its first location in the Triangle. Pins is a unique twist on a night out by bringing old-fashioned entertainment to life, with duckpin bowling, pinball, classic arcade games, ping pong, patio pong and more. Guests can also indulge in nostalgic beverages from an extensive drink menu featuring cocktails, craft beers, mocktails and kid-friendly drinks. With 2,500 square feet of space, it will be located on the ground floor of The Miles at 10 W. Franklin Street. This will be their third location in North Carolina. Get to know them here.

Restaurant news from Wake County

321 Coffee will open its newest location on NC State’s Centennial Campus next Monday at 930 Main Campus Dr. Suite 151 (Venture Place Building). They will be open Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Visit 321 here.

The Downtown Raleigh Alliance announced this week that Vic’s Pizza has opened on the ground floor of Bloc(83) in the Glenwood South neighborhood (1 Glenwood Avenue). It offers New York-style pizza (both whole and sliced), as well as appetizers, salads, sandwiches, calzones, stromboli and chicken wings (open until 3 a.m. Friday and Saturday). There are two other concepts – one in City Market and one on Lake Boone Trail. Check them out here.

A small change in the opening date. A brand new concept called Union Station Deli & Catering of Rocky Top Catering is now planning to open Aug. 22 in the iconic Raleigh Union Station at 510 W Martin St. in downtown Raleigh. Billed as a true New York-style deli, it will serve breakfast bagels, deli sandwiches and hot-pressed sandwiches — with toppings like house-smoked pastrami, corned beef and shredded chicken — as well as black-and-white cookies. Initial service will be open weekdays (6 a.m. to 3 p.m.), with weekend service slated to begin in January. The concept will be led by Sean Degnan, known for his stellar restaurant portfolio, including bu•ku, so•ca and kō•än. Follow us here on Instagram.

Thanks to reader Jim Canaday, we learned that we missed two concepts last week that were also in the Sweetwater Town Center Development (40 acres on US Highway 64 and Richardson Road). These two are: Fratelli’s Deli which is scheduled to open by the end of the month. And Southern Peak Brewery, this is progressing well and will be serving pizza once it is fully operational. In Cary, David McCreary announced that the newest fried chicken restaurant, Fat Bossopened on High House Road in 1969. This is their first location in North Carolina. They are known for Taiwanese crispy chicken cutlets. Get to know them here.

The folks on the Facebook page Choose Local & Small Ya’ll shared the news that the newest location of Moonwalker in Garner (21 Technology Dr.) is open with limited hours (Friday and Saturday: 4-11pm and Sunday: 12-8pm). During a recent visit to Wendell, I noticed that the latest version of City barbecue is now open at 2140 Treelight Way. The concept already has locations in Durham, Raleigh, Cary and Garner. Visit them here.

Restaurant news from Durham, Orange and Chatham

Something like a changing of the guard is taking place on Franklin Street in Chapel Hill. Gizmo’s Taproom in Chapel Hill will transition to Clouds are gathering at the end of this week, with Saturday, August 17th being the last day we operate as Gizmo. The entire staff has been transferred from Clouds, so expect to see familiar faces. Check back at Amber Alley at 157 E. Franklin St. this weekend. Visit Gizmo Chapel Hill’s Facebook page here.

Also from Franklin Street, Chapelboro reported that the new Playa Bowls (104 East Franklin Street, next to the new Starbucks location) held its grand opening last Saturday, August 10th. Check them out here.

In Durham, it was learned this week that Nanxiang Express, Nan Xiang’s acclaimed fast-casual sister brand Xiao Long Bao is opening its newest location in Durham this Friday, August 16 (it also has locations in New York and Boston). This expansion marks an exciting chapter for the brand, bringing its famous Shanghai-style dim sum to Durham. It is located at 1605 Erwin Road, Suite 50, in the Blue Light Living Apartment Building and is currently in soft open mode. Get to know them here.

Outside the airport, Raleigh Magazine reported on Scott Crawford’s latest project. The magazine reported that Crawford’s Original will open later this month in the former 42nd Street Oyster Bar location in Terminal 2 (just past security). The menu is tailored to travelers, catering to both those with time to waste between layovers and those rushing to their gate. The best way to follow Crawford is here on Instagram.

Over in Pittsboro we learned that Root cellar will be open for lunch on August 21 (beginning Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays) from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Expect power bowls, salads, pasta, sandwiches and more. Visit Root Cellar here.

As a reminder: On August 17 (this Saturday) Mom Dips, a 48-year-old tradition in Chapel Hill, will be shifting gears and starting a new chapter in their storied history by ending their traditional service model and switching to selling family-style meals to-go. But they will continue serving in the restaurant as usual for the next two weeks. Let’s just say the restaurant has been packed since their announcement, so plan your visit accordingly. Tickets are now available for 9th Annual Dinner on the Lawn taking place on September 15, 2024, on a grassy hillside at Meadow Lane Farm in idyllic Franklin County, featuring beautiful pastoral views and clear starlit skies.
