Lucy Cooper’s Texas Ice House is known for its comfort food like the donut brunch burger and the BLT with fried green tomatoes.
San Antonio food chain Lucy Cooper’s Ice House will sell its two most recently opened restaurants and focus on its original location at 16080 San Pedro Ave., said chef and owner Braunda Smith.
“We have made the very difficult decision to sell (two of) our Lucy Cooper’s and keep only the original San Pedro location in San Antonio,” Smith said in a Facebook post Thursday night. “It was a very heartbreaking decision, but we had to do what was in the best interest of our family. We have always been a small, woman-owned business and have been very proud of it. There were opportunities to grow with (an) investment company and it was not the right time or right for our family. Therefore, the decision was made to downsize rather than grow.”
Smith opened the first Lucy Cooper’s in 2018 and has enjoyed success with the 21-and-over concept, which features a full bar and Southern fare like donut brunch burgers, fried green tomato BLTs and clothesline bacon.
It expanded with a store at 1515 Kuehler Ave. in New Braunfels, which opened in 2021, and a branch in far west San Antonio, 8403 TX-151, which opened last summer.
Smith did not name the Houston-based owners of the Lucy Cooper’s locations in New Braunfels and Far West Side. She did say, however, that the group plans to rename both locations and change their menus.
During the transition period, the two restaurants will continue to operate as Lucy Cooper’s.
“We are only downsizing temporarily and will always be Lucy Cooper’s!” Smith said in the Facebook post. “When the time is right… we will expand our locations again!”
