CNOOC Limited develops over 100 billion cubic meters of proven gas

CNOOC Limited announces that Chinese authorities have approved the development of the over 100 billion cubic meter Lingshui 36-1 gas field, the world’s first large-scale ultra-shallow ultra-deepwater gas field, opening up a new exploration area in deep waters, News.az reports, citing Neftegaz.ru.

The Lingshui 36-1 gas field is located in the southern part of the Central Sag, Qiongdongnan Basin.

The average water depth of the gas field is about 1,500 meters and the burial depth is 210 meters. This makes it a typical extremely deep and extremely shallow gas field.

The field has been tested to produce over 10 million cubic metres of open flow natural gas per day.

The company has been searching for oil and gas deposits in the South China Sea for decades.

Several large gas fields have been discovered in the Yinggehai, Qiongdongnan and Pearl River estuary basins, namely Dongfang 1-1, Liwan 3-1, Lingshui 17-2, Baodao 21-1 and now Lingshui 36-1.

The proven gas reserves in the region are well over one trillion cubic meters, making the South China Sea trillion cubic meter gas region a reality.

Xu Changgui, chief geologist of the company, said: “Ultra-shallow gas reservoirs are important sources of hydrocarbons in deep waters;
However, they have to face world-class challenges in the exploration and development of the deposits. CNOOC Limited has adopted new exploration concepts for the formation mechanism and new technological approaches to overcome these challenges. The successful discovery of Lingshui 36-1 has opened up a new area for the exploration of gas resources in extremely deep and shallow waters.

Zhou Xinhuai, CEO and President of the company, said: “The newly discovered ultra-deep and ultra-shallow gas field is an important part of the trillion cubic meter gas area in the South China Sea. The completion of the trillion cubic meter gas area embodies the tremendous achievements that CNOOC Limited has made in the South China Sea over the past 40 years. We have now embarked on a new journey to further expand the company’s resource base. CNOOC Limited is committed to providing society with stable, clean energy and contributing to the low-carbon development of the economy.”
