million in federal funds to repair cracked runways at Stewart Airport

NEWBURGH, NY — Stewart International will receive $24 million in federal funding to repair two runways and install new, environmentally friendly LED lights in the pavement.

“Earlier this summer, I brought Department of Transportation leadership to Stewart to show them how federal infrastructure funding will open the floodgates for private investment in the airport and boost the economy of the entire region,” said Congressman Pat Ryan. “This historic funding is another giant step forward.”

Ryan, U.S. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and U.S. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand said the “massive” amount was critical to prevent deterioration and maintain security.

“This more than $24 million federal grant will literally pave the way for greater safety at Stewart International Airport and help take efforts to repair cracks in thousands of feet of runway pavement to new heights,” Schumer said.

He said aviation safety is a top priority for millions of Americans, and ensuring airports like Stewart have the resources they need is critical to keeping residents and visitors safe while traveling, as well as attracting business.

“Stewart International Airport serves tens of thousands of passengers each year and it is critical that its runways remain stable and resilient during the winter months,” said Gillibrand. “This massive $24 million in federal funding will enable critical repairs to Stewart International Airport’s runway so passengers entering and exiting the Hudson Valley can take off and land safely.”

The Airport Improvement Program of the Department of Transportation’s Federal Aviation Administration provides grants to public entities – and in some cases to private owners and companies – for the planning and development of public-use airports. Funds provided for the AIP come from the Airport and Airway Trust Fund, which is supported by user fees, fuel taxes, and other similar revenue sources.

Port Authority Executive Director Rick Cotton said the Port Authority looks forward to continuing to work with its federal partners to fully realize New York Stewart’s potential, make strategic investments that attract additional airlines and offer new destinations to travelers throughout the region.

Through the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act, lawmakers also secured $12,499,175 for Stewart International Airport over the next five years.
