Five dogs die in Madras mobile home fire, firefighters rescue two more; resident hospitalized with smoke inhalation

MADRAS, Ore. (KTVZ) — One resident was hospitalized with possible smoke inhalation and five dogs were killed in a trailer fire in Madras Thursday afternoon, but firefighters rescued two other dogs, said Jefferson County Fire and Emergency Services Chief Jeff Blake.

Firefighters responded to the reported fire at the Green Spot Mobile Home Park on Highway 97 around 2:30 p.m. and found thick smoke coming from a bedroom in the home, Blake said.

The emergency services entered the building through the front entrance and were able to quickly extinguish the fire, but it was considered uninhabitable.

Two women and one man lived in the house. One resident was taken to hospital with possible smoke inhalation. Apparently he had tried to save the dogs. The other two residents refused help from the Red Cross, the fire chief said.

The cause of the fire was investigated by the Oregon State Fire Marshal’s Office.

Blake said the fire was reported just 10 minutes after a very important emergency call resulting from a car accident, so the department’s volunteers helped respond during the busy period.

“Because we have firefighting resources at the Elk Lane Fire, we were able to handle both calls with assistance from the Redmond Fire Department, Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office, Madras Police Department and Oregon State Police,” the fire chief said.
