“Often in explosion cases, there are federal agencies that do really thorough investigations,” Howell said. “In this case, all we were told was, essentially, ‘It was an accidental explosion with a shop vacuum.’ That’s all we learned.”

Victims of a 2018 gas station explosion reached an $18.5 million settlement with two companies on Wednesday, claiming they caused the incident.
The settlement resolves allegations that two companies involved in filling and building the burning fuel tank ignored industry standards and their own safety protocols, resulting in the death of a co-owner of the gas station and the injury of a worker.
