Police reprimand man with machete in gas station parking lot in Donelson

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WSMV) – A man was arrested after allegedly threatening people at a gas station in Donelson on Monday.

According to the affidavit, officers with the Metro Nashville Police Department were called to the MAPCO gas station on the corner of Bell Road and Thompson Lane just before 4 a.m. Monday for a report of an armed man. Customers reported a man with a machete throwing merchandise at employees inside the store, the affidavit states.

When officers arrived, they found 43-year-old David Cole in the parking lot, sweating profusely and holding a machete, the affidavit states. Cole ignored orders to drop the weapon, so officers subdued him with a Taser and took him into custody, the affidavit states.

Witnesses told officers that Cole drove to MAPCO in a maroon Chrysler van and nearly struck a woman in the parking lot before crashing into several utility poles on Thompson Lane.

Before his arrest, according to the affidavit, Cole allegedly called dispatch and said he had been shot in a MAPCO on Elm Hill Pike and was on his way to TriStar Summit Medical Center. Officers noticed Cole’s maroon pickup truck driving at a high rate of speed on the wrong side of the road near Elm Hill Pike.

The arresting officers found that Cole was behaving erratically and uncooperative during his arrest and concluded that he was under the influence of a narcotic.

Cole was arrested Sunday morning and charged with two counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, including one against a police officer, as well as several other charges, including driving under the influence, reckless driving and hit and run.
