South Carolina’s Spencer Rattler is a “strong candidate” to be the Saints’ starter

Former South Carolina Gamecock Spencer Rattler is a strong candidate to be the New Orleans Saints’ starter.

According to NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo and Ian Rappaport, Saints rookie and former Gamecocks quarterback Spencer Rattler is reportedly a “strong candidate” to start the New Orleans Saints in their upcoming game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on October 13th.

The news comes as the Saints’ starting quarterback, Derek Carr, is expected to be out for several weeks with an oblique injury. Rattler is being considered along with teammate Jake Haener. Haener saw relief in New Orleans’ loss to the Chiefs on Monday night, completing two of seven passes for 17 yards.

Rattler was impressive during the NFL preseason and many felt that the former Gamecock could end up being the hotshot of the entire draft. He finished his college career with two impressive seasons at South Carolina and now his talent is showing at the NFL level.

After two seasons at South Carolina, Rattler was drafted by the Saints in the fifth round of the 2024 NFL Draft with the 150th pick. If he gets the call, the rookie would experience a live game for the first time in his young career.
