Kaos has canceled Netflix No. Season 2

One of the biggest shakeups in Netflix UK history was just released this summer: a modern retelling of Greek mythology with Jeff Goldblum at the helm. Has Netflix renewed or canceled? KAOS already for a season 2? Unfortunately, according to a now-deleted post on Instagram by one of the show’s stars, the series ended after just a single season.

Netflix has been pretty clever lately when it comes to naming the first seasons of series, leaving out any identifying season number. But make no mistake: KAOS was conceived as a multi-season series, especially considering Episode 8 goes to great lengths to set up future episodes. You’ve no doubt come to the same conclusion if you’ve been watching.

KAOS Season 2 Renewal Status

Official renewal status: Cancelled

Netflix is expected to officially cancel the show on October 7th. The news spread on Instagram via one of the show’s stars, Aurora Perrineau, who posted on Instagram (since deleted):

“Well… this one hurts.
I find it really difficult to explain how I feel, but I’ll try.
Σ
When I started auditioning for this show, I knew it was special, especially due to the fact that Charlie Covell’s scripts touched me in a way that most things didn’t. I knew all of these people and I loved them all – every flaw, everything.
For the first time in my life I was truly proud. I’m obviously proud of everyone’s work and the care they put into this project because I can tell you, they left everything on the floor. But I was also proud of myself, and that’s something I’ve struggled with.
When I was cast, I couldn’t believe anyone saw me. A girl who is not only a minority, but also a survivor of the SA – and you’re telling me that someone thinks I could be one of the leads of a show, have agency, pursue my own mission and be desirable enough to be the lover to be not just one amazing person, but two? Was I worthy of this? Everything that happened from that point on really changed my perspective.”

Although it doesn’t specifically mention that the show was canceled, the actress responded to a fan who directly asked if the show was over, saying, “Unfortunately, yes.” (Thanks to kitsch-zip for pointing this out.)

The creator has also expressed that he would like to make more seasons in the future. Speaking to Cosmopolitan, Charlie Covell said: “I think anything is possible,” adding: “My dream was three seasons. “I have a lot of ideas and a clear sense of what I want to do with it.”

Covell has apparently admitted that the series is at least worth watching in its own right if it doesn’t get renewed. “Also, I didn’t want to end with a complete cliffhanger. I hope it feels satisfying as a standalone season, and there’s always hope for more. I would really like to work more with these actors and this team. It was a bit like a dream come true.”

Why was KAOS cancelled?

As with all extensions, viewership ultimately matters and is the No. 1 determining factor, and no amount of marketing can get people in the door or get them to stay until the end. Ultimately, we managed to predict some of the biggest cancellations in the past, and as our forecast shows, the early numbers don’t look great.

Let’s start with the official global weekly top 10. So far, the show has been in the global top 10 in its first four weeks of qualification, recording 98.90 million hours watched, which equates to 14.90 million views:

week in the top 10 weekly period hours viewed Views/CVE Weekly Rank
1 August 25, 2024 to September 1, 2024 22,800,000 (New) 3,400,000 4
2 September 1, 2024 to September 8, 2024 39,200,000 (+72%) 5,900,000 3
3 September 8, 2024 to September 15, 2024 22,400,000 (-43%) 3,400,000 5
4 September 8, 2024 to September 22, 2024 14,500,000 2,200,000 7

Interestingly, Netflix changed labels in week four KAOS out of KAOS: Season 1 To KAOS: N/Ameaning it was now a limited series.

Let’s compare the series’ performance in week three to other Netflix Original debuts in 2024 that premiered on a Thursday. If we then compare it to other shows, we can see that as of week 3 in the charts it is still lagging behind some of the biggest budgets.

Let’s compare the weekly evolution of some shows that have been renewed (Supacell, The gentlemen, My life with the Walter Boys) compared to some that were canceled (Dead Boy Detectives, Wiped out). We can see that KAOS is lagging behind, at least so far.

What you can expect Kaos Season 2 if renewed

Warning: The following section contains spoilers. Proceed with caution!

Season 1, Episode 8 ends with several pieces being rearranged on the chessboard against Zeus, and KAOS actually arrives. In the end, he appears powerless as his vision of him being able to bleed comes true and the water feature that symbolizes his power has collapsed.

Let’s recap where some of these chess pieces lie: Prometheus is no longer controlled by Zeus and instead sits on the throne in Olympus. Riddy, now rescued and back on Earth after spending much of this season in the Underworld, has just met Cassandra, who has informed her that she is now a prophet and must go to Ari and “free the living.”

Back in the underworld, Caeneus has a similar task: freeing the dead. Much to Hades’ surprise, he gains the power to regenerate souls.

After fulfilling her father’s prophecy, Ari is now responsible for Krete. She tells her mother that she will not rule for the gods. Rather, she makes an agreement with the Trojans to rebuild Troy and destroy Olympus. The season ends with Dionysus standing in front of the palace and Hera giving the order over the phone to gather the troops and prepare the replacement bed.

Only Atropos, Lachesis and Clotho actually know where we go next. However, we will likely see further moves against Zeus as Olympus appears increasingly unstable. Weakened by Zeus, Hades will almost certainly lose control of the Underworld. As he hinted at the beginning of the season, everything falls apart when that happens.
