Jets are firing coach Robert Saleh after a 2-3 start to the season, a source says

The New York Jets have fired coach Robert Saleh after the team’s 2-3 start in his fourth season, a person familiar with the decision told The Associated Press.

Saleh coached from 20 to 36 years for the Jets, who are trying to break the NFL’s longest active playoff drought in 13 seasons.

Defensive coordinator Jeff Ulbrich will serve as interim coach, according to the person who spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity Tuesday because the Jets had not announced Saleh’s firing.

It’s the first time in owner Woody Johnson’s 25-year tenure that a head coach has been fired during the season.

The surprise move came a day after Saleh said he was confident Aaron Rodgers and the Jets could turn things around after suffering two straight losses, including a 23-17 loss to unbeaten Minnesota on Sunday in London . Rodgers had his worst game against New York when he threw three interceptions.

“There is so much football to play,” Saleh said Monday. “There are so many things we can get better at and there are so many things we can continue to build on, the things we do well.”

“So I’m not panicking. No one in the building is panicking.”

But apparently Johnson had seen enough of Saleh to make a change.

The Jets face the Buffalo Bills (3-2) on Monday night and have a chance to share the AFC East lead with a win. But instead of Saleh, 47-year-old Ulbrich will lead the team on the sidelines.

Ulbrich, who played linebacker with San Francisco for 10 seasons, joined the Jets in 2021 as part of Saleh’s first team. Ulbrich was an assistant at Atlanta for six seasons before coming to New York.
