School classes are canceled in Fort Mill as water main repair work continues. Here’s the latest.

The Fort Mill School District canceled classes on Tuesday due to the ongoing effects of a burst water pipe on Monday.

UAccording to the York County Municipality, utility workers struck and damaged a water main near US 21 and Gold Hill Road on Monday. The county said repairs were completed by 11:15 p.m. Monday and water service should be restored by Monday night. The county has implemented a boil water warning for anyone who has lost water or water pressure.

“As a precautionary measure, water should be boiled before drinking or cooking with it until further notice,” York County wrote Monday evening. “We will have more information on this tomorrow morning, but full service should be restored to affected areas very soon.”

Shortly before midnight, the county said the water main began leaking as pressure was restored. No time was given as to when repairs would be completed or water service would be fully restored.

At 5:30 a.m., the district updated the progress. Customers’ water supply may have been restored, but at a lower pressure. Repair of the leak was still in progress even with the system running.

According to the district, the water supply could be turned off on Tuesday in order to carry out final repair work.

Initially, the school district said school cafeterias would cooperate with the boil water advisory and provide drinking water to schools so students can attend classes on Tuesday.

Early Tuesday, the district changed schedules and canceled classes for the day because water main work was still ongoing, affecting about half of the district’s schools and facilities.

The Fort Mill School District is the largest in York County with nearly 18,500 students.

The water main disruption did not impact Fort Mill city system customers and municipal users are not subject to a boil water advisory, the city announced.

This is a developing story
