3 dead after medical helicopter crashes in Owenton, company confirms

OWENTON, Ky. – Three people died when a medical helicopter crashed in Owen County Monday evening.

According to the FAA, the Bell 206 helicopter crashed around 6 p.m. Air Evac Lifeteam, an aviation medical services company, confirmed in a statement that three crew members from AEL Base 133 in Grant County died in a crash in Owenton on their way to pick up a patient.

“This was a terribly tragic accident and our deepest condolences go out to the families and friends of the employees,” an Air Evac Lifeteam spokesman said in a statement. “Our main focus now is supporting the affected families and our team members. Critical incident stress management teams have been deployed to support our team members during this difficult time.”

Air Evac Lifeteam said it would not release the names of the crew members at this time. The spokesman noted that the company is cooperating with the FAA and NTSB in investigating the crash.

Owen Electric Cooperative, Inc. reported a power outage for several customers due to the crash around 6:30 p.m. Power was restored shortly afterwards at 6:50 p.m
