The sex scene with Andrew Garfield and Florence Pugh went “further” than intended

The chemistry between Andrew Garfield and Florence Pugh is undeniable.

So much so that the two gave it their all while filming a sex scene in their new film We Live in Time.

Garfield, 41, told the story during a “Happy Sad Confused” podcast taping on Oct. 4 at the 92nd St. Y in New York.

“We’re doing the first take of this very intimate, passionate sex scene,” Garfield told host Josh Horowitz. “And it’s a closed set, which means it’s just me and Florence in a room together and the cameraman, our cameraman, a very nice man named Stewart.”

Garfield continued, “The scene becomes more passionate as we choreograph it and we kind of get into it and we go a little further than we should just because we’ve never heard ‘Cut’ and it feels safe and we There are.” For example: “Okay, we’ll move on to the next step and next we’ll let it go and just keep going.” “

But Garfield said that both he and 28-year-old Pugh eventually “telepathically said to each other, ‘This definitely feels like a long time.'”

“I look up and in the corner is Stewart and our boom operator,” the actor recalls. “Stewart has the camera at his side and has turned into the wall.”

Despite the sex scene, Garfield and Pugh are both in relationships with other people. Garfield is dating spiritual reader and counselor Kate Thomas. He previously dated his The Amazing Spider-Man co-star Emma Stone from 2011 to 2015.

Meanwhile, Pugh is rumored to be dating Peaky Blinders star Finn Cole. After three years of dating, she separated from Zach Braff in 2022.

“We Live in Time” premiered at the Toronto Film Festival last month. The film is directed by John Crowley and explores the decades-long romance between the characters of Garfield and Pugh.

Garfield plays Tobias, a Weetabix representative who is going through a divorce at the start of the film, while Pugh plays Almut, a former figure skater turned chef who is eventually diagnosed with cancer.

During a press conference for the film at the San Sebastian Film Festival last month, Garfield said that he “thought deeply about the meaning of life” when he read the script for the emotional film.

“I was thinking about life, death, love, meaning, time… when I was 39 and 40 years old, kind of having a mid-life crisis, looking forward, looking back, looking exactly where I was, and thinking: ,What now?’ ?’ He shared, according to Variety, adding, “This script came in and it was like I wrote it from that place.”

Pugh acknowledged her role in the film by shaving her head.

Last month, she told Vanity Fair that she declined Crowley’s offer to wear a wig or other hairpieces to portray her cancer-stricken character.

“I just stopped him mid-sentence and said, ‘John, no one can play a character like that in a movie like this without doing what needs to be done,'” the Oscar nominee said. “And if you don’t want to do it, I don’t think you should do a story like this.”
