Patriots Monday Live: Jerod Mayo talks Jabrill Peppers arrest and New England’s fourth straight loss

Following her appearance on “The Greg Hill Show,” Mayo addressed the media on a video call. Here are the highlights:

On the potential of getting rookie QB Drake Maye into the starting lineup: “When I meet with the coaches today, it’s about, you know, we’re in a solutions-oriented business and we don’t play good football and so we have to look at every single unit and every single player and every single figure to find out. how we use this squad to go out and win games.”

On whether he would consider a new offensive player: “That’s not up for debate.”

On QB Jacoby Brissett’s performance on Sunday: “It just wasn’t good enough. I think we played well enough on defense and special teams to win the football game. As a quarterback, and he understands this, he touched the ball every single play and we didn’t win the game or score enough points to win the game and I think he would echo the same sentiment that it wasn’t was good enough.”

On whether the success of rookies Jayden Daniels and Bo Nix will influence his quarterback decision: “I saw these guys in the movies. I would say every situation is unique and that applies to our situation too. I think you nailed it. You know, these guys, it was a little rocky at first, except for Jayden Daniels, but these guys are playing at a high level and so it’s natural for fans and media to say, ‘We’ve got a good quarterback waiting for us.’ Wings too. ‘

“But at the same time, you know, our mentality is, ‘How do we develop him?’ How do we get the guys on the field around him to develop and move forward from there?”

How the security group strengthened: “It was very encouraging. These boys grew up yesterday. I liked the way they played and hopefully they continue to develop at this pace in the future. You know, (Kyle) Dugger’s injury, and you know what (Jabrill Peppers) is going through right now, we’re going to need guys to step up. And I thought they did that yesterday. It wasn’t perfect, but I thought they played hard. I thought they did what we asked them to do and something to build on.”

On the offensive: “I actually think they did a pretty good job. Of course there was pressure throughout the day, but there were also some pockets that seemed pretty clean, and you have to balance it all when evaluating the quarterback spot. It’s like the offensive line per play. But I think they showed fighting spirit.”

What Jerod Mayo said about Jabrill Peppers’ arrest

New England Patriots safety Jabrill Peppers is charged with assault, strangulation and drug possession in connection with an “altercation between two individuals” Saturday morning in Braintree, police said.

In a statement Monday, police said Peppers, 29, was arrested after officers responded to a residential address in Braintree early Saturday morning.

The statement did not specify the time of response or the specific address.

“He called me that morning,” Mayo said on WEEI. “I knew what was going on. We notified the NFL of what was going on and we are still gathering information. … I don’t think anyone knows the facts. It’s a process.”

Mayo addressed the media in a video press conference later in the morning. He noted that while Peppers was not with the team on Monday, the coach expects him to return as the legal process progresses.

“He’s not in the building today. You know, he has his looks and things like that,” Mayo said. “But as we gather information, he can, he can definitely be the building, like we don’t know, we don’t know enough to say he shouldn’t be in the building.”

Peppers was on the injury report the week before Sunday’s game and was downgraded to out Saturday afternoon. Mayo declined to speculate whether Peppers would have been healthy enough to play Sunday.

“I’ve already discussed it with the team,” Mayo said. “This message is really for the team. And what I want to say is that throughout training camp and throughout the season, we talk about situations that happen around the league so we can learn from other people. As we gather information, I think the players need to know about it so we can learn from what happened.”

What Jerod Mayo said on WEEI

Mayo joined the “Greg Hill Show” at 9 a.m. on WEEI. Here’s what he said.

On the loss against Miami: “I thought those guys played well enough on defense and special teams to win the game. Lots of challenges offensively and just not good.”

Whether it was the worst defeat he has experienced in his career: “Not at all. There have been bad losses here, but once again my focus is on this one. It’s a real loss if we don’t learn from it, myself included. I’ve been through some tough games.”

Regarding the penalties: “It starts with me first and we just have to get better. I would like to say that some of the penalties that occurred in the game were questionable. …But it’s all said and done. They demanded punishment. And we just have to get better.”

What needs to change: “We are in the solutions business, no matter who the players are in the locker room. We as trainers have to find solutions. I say it every week, every spot is rated. And that still applies today.”

Whether his current squad is capable of winning games: “We are always striving to get better. I won’t just say our squad is good or bad. That’s what we’re working on, and it’s my job and the coaching staff’s job to get these guys to go out and perform consistently at a high level here and in the future.”

Regarding reports of a locker room mutiny: “The mutiny report is what it is. You know, guys come out with things all the time. You have to decide for yourself whether it is true or false. You participate in these things. …You (the media) use what the player said and they also use you as vessels to pass the message to the players too because they are all listening. They all read it and see it. I started seeing it on social media.”

Whether his plan for the quarterbacks will work: “We will get better. And again, I would say all positions are always evaluated.”

When Jacoby Brissett gives you the best chance of winning: “We didn’t have our full staff meeting today. This is a conversation not just in this place, but in all places. … We’re not playing well. It’s no secret. And as head coach of this team, I have to take full responsibility for them.”

On Jabrill Peppers’ arrest and whether he’s still on the team: “He called me that morning. I knew what was going on. We notified the NFL of what was going on and we are still gathering information. … I don’t think anyone knows the facts. It’s a process.”
