Greenville Schools returns Wednesday; Will students make up missed days?

More than a week after Tropical Storm Helene devastated the Upstate, some school districts are reopening.

Last Tuesday, the state Department of Education sent a memo to district leaders regarding school calendars and e-learning policies.

All districts shall establish a 190-day school calendar, including at least 180 instructional days covering at least nine months and three days designated as backup days.

A local school board may, by majority vote, grant a waiver for up to three missed days only after the district has made up at least three full days or the same number of hours.

If the district needs to waive more than three additional days, the school board may request the State Board of Education to waive up to three additional days due to extreme weather conditions or other disruptions.

“We recognize the difficult balance between ensuring student safety and fulfilling teaching responsibilities during this time and are committed to supporting you as you navigate these decisions. Please know that SCDE stands ready to support you and your communities during this challenging time,” C. Matthew Ferguson, assistant superintendent and chief academic officer, said in the memo.

Here’s what we know so far about which schools will be open.

Upstate Colleges Update

Most universities in the Upstate have already reopened. Spartanburg Methodist Church will reopen Tuesday and classes are expected to resume Wednesday. Winthrop University will host a virtual learning day on Tuesday.

Schools in Greenville County will reopen Wednesday

Schools in Greenville County will reopen on Wednesday, October 9th. The district said families will be contacted directly if a temporary bus stop is needed.

On Friday, 300 Greenville County Schools team members drove 9,000 miles to assess the conditions. The district noted 1,500 problems, including downed and low-hanging power lines, debris, road blockages, closed bridges, sinkholes and signal failures at major intersections.

On Monday, teams reassessed and found more than 1,000 remaining issues.

“Although work will continue throughout the weekend and today, additional time will be needed to address the updated conditions assessed today, complete the detour and communicate with families,” the district said in a news release.

Greenville County Schools will also extend the end of the first quarter by five instructional days, Oct. 11-21, to allow time to catch up on missed content. The second quarter end date of December 20th will not change.

Spartanburg school districts are returning

Spartanburg School Districts 1 and 2 will return to the regular school schedule on Tuesday. Districts 5, 6 and 7 will reopen with a two-hour delay.

Anderson County is closed for student vacation

All Anderson County districts are closed through Wednesday. October 7th and 8th are student holidays.
