At 5-0, the Vikings are in familiar territory and hoping to avoid a history they’ve repeated before

The Minnesota Vikings are going into the bye week at 5-0. They are at the top of the NFC and lead the division. Neither will change until week seven, October 20th, at the earliest, when they take on the Detroit Lions.

When the schedule was released this summer, going undefeated on the bye week seemed like a very unlikely outcome for the Vikings. Weeks two through five seemed to be the most difficult part of the schedule and they handled them with flying colors.

This is the third time since 2003 that the Vikings have started 5-0, and the first two didn’t end particularly well.

Vikings want to avoid history repeating itself

One thing that always happens to Vikings fans is that they fall back on the worst outcome. In the 64 years the franchise has existed, there has been a certain amount of conditioning.

The Vikings started 5-0 in both 2003 and 2016 and failed to make the playoffs in either season. They are the only team to achieve this feat twice, and only four other teams have been given this special honor:

  • 1993 New Orleans Saints
  • 2009 New York Giants
  • 2009 Denver Broncos
  • 2015 Atlanta Falcons

As we saw with the Vikings last season, anything can happen. They were riding a wave of momentum before Kirk Cousins suffered a torn Achilles tendon and the Vikings ended the season at 3-6.

This season, the Vikings are finding different ways to win. The running game, building big leads, attacks through the air and big attacks on defense contributed significantly to their victories.

If the Vikings want to avoid the same fate as the 2003 and 2016 teams, they need to be consistent and play good football.
