Western North Carolina schools closed, opened, opened

Tropical Storm Helene struck western North Carolina on September 27, leaving devastated communities and scenes of unimaginable devastation. There was also disruption in schools across the region.

While some school systems in WNC have been able to resume classes, an uncertain future remains for many.

Here’s a look at the status of the region’s school systems.

Which public school systems in Western North Carolina are open or are opening?

Cherokee County Schools Reopening on October 2nd.

Clay County Schools resumed its regular schedule on September 30.

Graham County Schools resumed its regular schedule on October 2.

Jackson County Schools will return on Monday, October 7th.

Macon County Schools Return to regular schedule October 3rd.

McDowell County Schools plans to bring students back on Wednesday, October 9th. School operations will take place with a two-hour delay until the end of the week. Old Fort Elementary will not open with the rest of the system. Meetings for Old Fort Elementary School parents will be held at Greenlee Baptist Church, 5967 US 70, Old Fort, on Tuesday, October 8, at 4:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m.

Polk County Schools: Barring any unforeseen circumstances, staff will return to school on designated work days on Monday and Tuesday, October 7th and 8th. Students are scheduled to return on Wednesday, October 9th. The school system will send another message confirming these details early this week.

Rutherford County Schools stated their goal is to reopen schools to students on Wednesday, October 9th. To achieve this target date, Monday and Tuesday, October 7th and 8th, will be mandatory work days for school employees.

Swain County Schools resumed its regular schedule on October 3.

Which Western North Carolina public school systems are closed?

Asheville City Schools remains closed indefinitely until further notice. The system will notify families, students and staff of reopening for 72 hours. ACS will continue to provide updates on social media and Parent Square. As for the possibility of remote learning, Superintendent Maggie Fehrman said in a news release that remote learning is not possible at this time due to ongoing widespread power and internet outages.

Avery County Schools will remain closed until it is safe to return. Although there is no set timeline, the goal is to reopen as soon as possible. Administration will notify staff, parents and students of the reopening for 72 hours to give everyone time to prepare.

Buncombe County Schools remains closed until it can be safely opened. This requires the buildings’ electricity and water supplies to be restored and extensive work still needs to be carried out. To help families plan, BCS will provide you with advance notice of when it is safe to reopen.

Hanger Hall School will remain closed until Oct. 11, but plans to open Oct. 14 when power is restored to the buildings.

Haywood County Schools will remain closed to all staff and students until Friday, October 11th. From October 7th to 11th there is a day of rest for all employees and students. Jonathan Valley Elementary School and Bethel Elementary School will continue to serve free meals to students 18 and under from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Henderson County Schools will remain closed to students until October 11th. The current goal is to reopen schools the week of October 14th. Once a final decision is made, the system will notify families of the exact date HCPS will return students.

Madison County Schools will remain closed until it is safe to reopen. When a firm opening date is set, the system announces it in advance, giving families enough time to prepare.

Mitchell County Schools remains closed until further notice. Employees are urged to volunteer at local shelters during this time of need.

Transylvania County Schools remains closed until October 11th. There will be voluntary work days for employees on Thursday and Friday from October 10th to 11th. The school is scheduled to open to students on October 14th.

Watauga County Schools will remain closed to students, teachers and teaching assistants until at least October 11th. While all of our schools have electricity, internet and telephone systems are not operational at six schools. The system will also work with NCDOT to determine when it is safe to put buses on the road. The system said it plans to reopen school as soon as it is safe to do so.

Yancey County Schools will remain closed to students, faculty and staff until at least October 11th. The school system said there are still many families in need and work is still being done on infrastructure: power, water, sewer, internet, roads, buildings and rescue efforts.

Which private schools in the Asheville area are closed?

Asheville Christian Academy suffered significant damage and has not provided a timeline for reopening.

Asheville School is closed until Oct. 14.

Carolina Day School remains closed until October 14th. Families will receive an update by Wednesday, October 9th regarding our ability to reopen on October 15th. The priority now is to keep everyone safe.

Christ School is on extended fall break and expects to reopen campus for the return of students on October 14th.

Emmanuel Lutheran School remains closed until further notice.

The New Classical Academy will remain closed until October 11th and hopes to reopen on October 14th.

Odyssey Community School is closed until further notice. Families will be updated on reopening progress.

Reynolds Mountain Christian Academy remains closed until October 11th. The school said it is working to bring students back to campus but that all services are still not in place.

Veritas Christian Academy is closed and will reopen once power and water are restored. The school said it will let families know when it is safe to return to school.
