Padres trolling is not an excuse to be idiots

Good morning, winners! Welcome back to Morning Win. Thanks for rocking out with us today. We are pleased that you give us your time.

Dodgers fans crossed the finish line by a mile on Sunday.

Fan behavior completely disrupted Game 2 of the Dodgers-Padres on Sunday. Fans decided it was okay to throw things at outfielder Jurickson Profar after he robbed Mookie Betts (and Dodgers fans!) of a home run.

Profar trolled fans a bit after making this incredible catch with his hands outstretched. They even tried to knock the ball out of his glove. Despite all this, he still felt it.

Yes, I would troll her too. I think most people would! This is sport!

When you achieve something so incredible, you can be a little proud. These are the rules. And when you’re on the other side, you have to take it on the chin. It is what it is.

Dodgers fans don’t seem to understand that last part. Someone concluded that Profar’s mockery was a license to be an idiot. They threw a baseball at him from the stands and stopped the game entirely to resolve the situation. Other fans then threw water bottles at Fernando Tatis, who had also been talking to fans throughout the game.

But trash talk doesn’t give anyone permission to be an idiot.

Look, I understand. Everyone understands that being mocked is no fun, especially when your team gets beat up like the Dodgers did on Sunday.

Fandom is a harrowing experience. For most of us, it is a journey filled with disappointment and dismay. In each year, only one team wins a championship in each sport. So, yes, your season will likely end in agony. Even from moment to moment it can be difficult. In sports there are coincidences. At some point your team will mess up or do something stupid. You’ll have to deal with it. That’s what you will do, because that’s what fandom is.

Despite everything, we put all our heart and soul into the teams we love. You don’t know us. They don’t really care about us. But we still love them and continue to love them no matter how much they disappoint us. We show up. And on top of that, we pay top dollar for tickets when we go to games.

So when fans are sitting in their seats at games, a bit of trash talk is OK, albeit within limits. Tell your opponent that he stinks! Talk nonsense to the other team’s star player when you’re close enough to do it. As long as you don’t pose a problem, everything is fine.

Dodgers fans chose to be problematic. This behavior is inexcusable and shameful and has no place in the sports we love.

If your emotions are so uncontrollable that you can’t help but be physically abusive when things don’t go your way, you probably shouldn’t participate in games.

Bronny x Bron

In other good news, we got our first look at LeBron James and Bronny James on the court together during the Lakers’ preseason game against the Suns.

So many novelties were packed into this small moment. It’s both the first time Bronny and LeBron have officially played together and the first time a father-son duo played together in an NBA game.

This is a special moment – one we’ve been waiting for for years. Now that it’s finally happened, it’s impressive.

In the background, there remains talk of LeBron James pulling the strings to bring Bronny to the Lakers and whether Bronny should have even entered the draft this season. They won’t disappear. I don’t think they should.

But in this moment, it’s hard not to appreciate the longevity and dynamism of LeBron James Sr. and be happy that this is actually happening.

Know when to fold them

The Las Vegas Aces’ title defense is officially over. The Liberty took complete control in the fourth quarter of Sunday’s game, sending Vegas home and punching their tickets back to the WNBA Finals.

On the one hand, this result shouldn’t be shocking. New York has been the best team in the WNBA all season. The Liberty are fully focused on getting back to the top of the game and redeeming themselves from last season, and it shows.

Meanwhile, the Aces have been moving around all season. A’ja Wilson was the best player in the league, but she has to be. Their supporting cast hasn’t been as supportive on the court this season. The players stepped back and Wilson had to pick up the slack.

Even so, it’s still shocking to see the Aces go down like this. For most of the last three seasons, whenever Las Vegas has had to rise to the occasion, the team has done so without batting an eye. This season, Vegas just seemed to run out of juice.

This just goes to show you how difficult it is to win a single championship – let alone score three. The fact that the Aces even had a real chance of making it this season is unreal.

We’ve had an incredible run, folks. Don’t be sad that it’s over – be happy that you saw it.
