Discounter Big Lots closes stores across Washington

Struggling Ohio discounter Big Lots is closing its Wenatchee location along with hundreds of other stores across the country.

Big Lots describes itself as a one-stop shop for home goods: furniture, wall decor, kitchen appliances and so on. But the store has fallen on hard times, according to this Assets piece. Recently, the store lost nearly a quarter of a billion dollars due to the exodus of its “regular customers.” These customers either postpone purchases en masse or buy “expensive necessities” elsewhere.

In a recent filing with the SEC, Big Lots reiterated its promise to “vigorously address poorly performing stores.”

The number of “authorised store closures” previously stood at 150. That number has now doubled. This could be a harbinger of even more dramatic changes; there are “significant” internal doubts about the retailer’s ability to continue operating.
