NASCAR Cup Series drivers have found out just how tough Talladega Superspeedway is.

winner

William Byron

Byron was only about 10 feet away from winning Sunday’s race. He made an attempt from outside to overtake Ricky Stenhouse on the line but narrowly failed. While the disappointment of not winning the race may be painful, Byron can easily compete in Charlotte having secured a spot in the Round of 8 of the NASCAR Cup Series playoffs.

Kyle Larson

Larson finished fourth and had little chance of winning the race if the leaders had failed or he had been able to move. He was corralled from below and pushed Brad Keselowski to the finish. Larson had a slight problem on pit road after the first stage when he ran over pit road and had to back up, costing the team a spot on the track. However, he managed to fight his way through the field and achieve his 12th place in the top 5 of the season and his 15th place in the top 10.

Ricky Stenhouse Jr.

It’s easy to pick the race winner, but Stenhouse was at the front for most of the day, leading 19 laps. He also fended off Austin Cindric getting slammed into the left door as part of “The Big One,” then fended off Brad Keselowski and William Byron to score his first win since the 2023 Daytona 500.

loser

Ryan Blaney

Ryan Blaney, the defending Cup Series champion, was in the top 10 for much of the race, but got into a wreck at the end of the second stage when Alex Bowman hit his rear bumper, sending Blaney into chaos as Shane van Gisbergen then climbed into the outside wall and received Ross Chastain. The only bright spot is that Blaney is on the positive side of the elimination line in Charlotte.

Austin Cindric

Cindric led 29 laps on Sunday and looked to be in a good position to make a big jump in the playoff standings or even win and secure a spot in the Round of 8. However, being the car that caused the 28-car accident instantly wiped out all of its positive momentum. Cindric now has to go to the Charlotte ROVAL next weekend and win as he finds himself in 11th place out of the 12 playoff drivers.

Joey Logano

Joey Logano won the first race of the Cup Series Playoffs in Atlanta but hasn’t won since. Logano was involved in the accident that claimed the life of Ryan Blaney and caused some front end damage to his No. 22 Penske Racing Ford. However, Logano was able to overcome it and get back to the lead with 19 laps. Then Logano got into the big accident caused by his teammate Austin Cindric and ended up finishing 33rd. Logano is now the first driver from the Round of 8 heading to Charlotte.
