49ers News: Quarterback Brock Purdy proves once again that the criticism is wrong

A year ago I wrote a post highlighting every (bad) take from Brock Purdy. Of course, I’m just an irrelevant blogger, so I didn’t expect anyone to listen to reason. After a year and with a larger sample, it’s probably a good idea to go back through it all and see if anything has solidified further.

Purdy continued to play lights. He leads the league in nearly every number they have a QB stat for. He had a higher passing percentage than Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes in his first 25 career starts. So why the disrespect?

I assume it’s the sixth round pick.

I still maintain that when some of these criticisms began, they were valid. For about five games. After that the teams had a lot of the film to tear it down. Purdy even said recently that he noticed the defense adjusting to his game.

I grabbed the takes and thought we’d take a look at it now that we still have a year left.

He benefits from Kyle Shanahan’s system, like all quarterbacks

I’ve already mentioned CJ Beathard and Nick Mullens and Johnny Manziel; Quarterbacks who never upset the world with disparate results.

Let me mention another quarterback. Chicago Bears quarterback Caleb Williams. How did he play? During the offseason it was said that he had a great system with weapons, a running back, etc. He definitely doesn’t benefit from the system.

So what if Williams was drafted into a system as a rookie and doesn’t look particularly hot right now, but Purdy turned heads as a rookie? Williams was the first overall pick in 2024. Purdy was the last overall pick in 2022.

He is a system quarterback

Joe Montana and Tom Brady also counted here. I’ve already used the example of the Kansas City Chiefs in Montana. It’s a coach’s job to run an offense that benefits the quarterback who runs it. Why did Shanahan/Lynch move on from Colin Kaepernick? Because this system wouldn’t work for him.

How have Russell Wilson and the Denver Broncos evolved? What about Sam Darnold? He’s been all over the place and is now doing well with the Minnesota Vikings. Well, people are wondering if the 49ers kept the right quarterback.

Kyle Shanahan designs offensive systems around his quarterbacks (see RGIII and Trey Lance), which is what good offensive coaches do instead of putting a square peg in a round hole. That is, the offense that Shanahan has wanted “to run” is what you see in Purdy.

He can’t throw the deep ball

I’ll just leave this nugget of information here:

He lacks arm strength

When do you have to throw it? The far across the field? Twice a season? That’s not my opinion, Mark Schlereth said the same thing:

Who cares about arm talent? 70 yard throws. People rave about arm talent. I always hear, “Oh, it’s about the arm talent.”

When do you throw a 70 yard ball? Never. Maybe once or twice a season on a Hail Mary. You don’t do that. It’s about what you do from here to here *leads hand from neck to crown*

He still has to play a game where there is adversity and he is coming from behind

This recording has not aged well. It was already bad. So, so bad. How bad? It honestly looks like something I would say.

Well, that is Really bad.

I used the Las Vegas Raiders game last year, but that became obsolete after he did this.

We don’t know what he’ll be like in the crucial moments of the postseason

Similar to the previous view of coming from behind, this is just stupid when you watch the games. Did Purdy play four quarters of good football in the NFC Divisional and NFC Championship? NO.

Did Purdy play well when it mattered most? Yes.

Did Patrick Mahomes do the same thing in the Super Bowl? Yes.

We’ve already done the play from behind setup later, but he got the 49ers out of a huge hole in the NFC Championship (thanks to the defense) and led them to the Super Bowl. He might have won them a Super Bowl if the offensive line hadn’t decided to go rogue.

He can’t play well for four full quarters of football in the postseason

Neither does Patrick Mahomes. Stop while you’re ahead. Or something behind it.

He has weapons, it’s all parts around him

Let’s see here

No Christian McCaffrey
For some parts of the game, Deebo Samuel does not exist
Brandon Aiyuk is in la-la land
George Kittle is out for a game or two

And let’s see, he threw for 1,130 yards (ranking fourth) and is in the top 10 in almost every category that matters for 2024.

His rate of interceptable throws is high

However, will they be intercepted? He has two picks in two games. One of them I can’t really fault him for because it was deflected at the offensive line. Your opinion may be different.

He has good defense

Ha.

Ha. Ha. Ha.

You do it. However, feel free to back out if you wish.
