Matt Eberflus explains what made the Bears’ running game effective against the Rams

The Chicago Bears’ offense showed signs of life in Sunday’s win over the Los Angeles Rams, where they finally managed to establish the run game.

After failing to top 85 rushing yards in three games, the Bears totaled 131 rushing yards, an average of 4.7 yards per carry. D’Andre Swift bore the brunt for Chicago, with 16 carries for 93 yards and a touchdown at 5.8 yards per carry, which was encouraging after the veteran averaged just 1.8 yards per carry in three games. Roschon Johnson added seven carries for 26 yards, an average of 3.7 yards per carry and one score.

Bears coach Matt Eberflus discussed what made the running game so effective against the Rams, and it all came down to attention to detail.

“It was just details in terms of the details of the blocks, the guys were in charge of the details,” Eberflus said. “I thought it was up to the runners. The runners did a really good job running uphill. The type of runs were a little different. These explosive plays require all eleven guys to be able to pull it off. The details were really good.

One could certainly point to the fact that entering Week 4, the Rams had the Indianapolis Colts’ 30th-ranked run defense, allowing 177 rushing yards per game. But for what it’s worth, Chicago faced the Indianapolis Colts’ 32nd-ranked run defense, which also allowed an average of 237 rushing yards per game, while the Bears totaled a season-low 63 rushing yards.

Facing a struggling run defense certainly helped, but the difference this week was the execution and commitment to the run game, which also made things easier for rookie quarterback Caleb Williams.
