Scarlet Knights need to put the loss behind them quickly

play

Rutgers football had opportunities.

So many opportunities.

The Scarlet Knights failed to capitalize on any of them.

Instead of celebrating a typical Big Ten win, Greg Schiano’s team instead boarded a plane to New Jersey and lamented missed opportunities in a 14-7 loss to Nebraska on Saturday at Memorial Stadium in Lincoln.

“We just didn’t play well enough to win this game,” coach Greg Schiano told reporters afterward.

The key word there is “this”.

No, Rutgers didn’t play well enough to win “that” game. “This” game was just the thing for the Scarlet Knights, but they couldn’t get it done.

It was a disappointing result in many areas.

Rutgers needs to end “this” game quickly.

The Scarlet Knights’ undefeated start to the season is over. They had a chance to get to 5-0 but instead came home 4-1.

There are still winnable games for Rutgers football, starting with Wisconsin

But the good news for Rutgers?

There are still many opportunities ahead, many winnable games, starting Saturday at home against Wisconsin.

The Badgers beat Purdue in Madison this weekend, but that result may say more about the Boilermakers’ ineptitude than anything else.

Wisconsin already lost starting quarterback Tyler Van Dyke to a season-ending injury, and on Thursday leading rusher Chez Mellusi announced he was stepping away from the team to “focus on his health.”

The Badgers were defeated by Alabama in their last two games and then lost by 17 to USC in Los Angeles.

Luke Fickell’s team still has talent and size in the trenches, but they are vulnerable.

This is an opportunity that Rutgers must take advantage of.

Another chance comes the following week when UCLA travels across the country to play the Scarlet Knights at SHI Stadium – the Bruins are 1-4, with their only win coming by three points in the season opener against Hawaii became.

So despite the panic in some parts of the Rutgers fan base, the sky isn’t falling.

The Scarlet Knights still have a very legitimate chance to be 6-1 when they make their own trip to Los Angeles to play USC on October 25th.

But that will only happen if this Nebraska performance is truly an anomaly.

Rutgers needs to get back to capitalizing on key opportunities

Rutgers failed to enter its opponent’s territory nine times and escaped with just seven points.

Rutgers fails to block a punt, reach the 2-yard line, and fails to reach the end zone on six attempts (it certainly looked like Kyle Monangai scored on one of those attempts, but the officials ejected him inside the 1). low).

Rutgers cannot land a guaranteed touchdown pass inside the 5-yard line without a defender in sight.

Simply put, Rutgers cannot fail to capitalize on these opportunities.

And the Scarlet Knights’ failure to do so was surprising, as capitalizing on their opponents’ failures played a major role in winning their first four games.

It was also surprising that Rutgers got so far away from the run – Monangai had eight runs for 64 yards in the first quarter, but only 11 runs for 14 yards the rest of the game. Rutgers ran the ball 32 times as a team, its lowest rate this season.

Nebraska’s defense played a role in that, adjusting to limit Monangai when he got the ball in the final three quarters.

Still, much about this game was surprising and sometimes downright confusing.

And yet it was a game.

A disappointing game.

The Scarlet Knights need to put “this” game behind them. They need to look more like the mentally tough team that did what it took to beat Virginia Tech and Washington.

They still have winnable games on the schedule. You have to take advantage of it.

What stopped it from taking its chances on Saturday?

Rutgers has to leave it at Nebraska.
