Hawaii football loses another heartbreaker to San Diego State

The University of Hawaii football team lost again to San Diego State on Saturday, losing 27-24.

Hawaii lost the Mountain West Conference opener 2-3 in the 2024 season.

After both teams traded field goals in the first quarter, San Diego State began to pull away in the third quarter, taking a 20-10 lead in the third quarter.

Hawaii responded with back-to-back passing touchdowns from Brayden Schager to take a 24-20 lead with 9:39 left in the fourth quarter.

San Diego State responded with a 2-yard score by Marquez Cooper with 7:05 left in what turned out to be the final score of the game.

On the ensuing drive, Hawaii converted on fourth-and-18 after scoring 42 points of their own. To keep the drive going, the Rainbow Warriors turned the ball over on fourth-and-2 at the SDSU 31 and decided not to call a timeout.

UH got the ball back after forcing another punt, albeit with 10 seconds left at its own 23. The Bows were unable to advance the ball any further.

Schager completed 26 of his 44 passes for 272 yards, three touchdowns and one interception, while SDSU’s Danny O’Neil completed 24 of his 33 passes for 224 yards, one touchdown and no interceptions. Meanwhile, Cooper ran 30 times for 109 yards and two touchdowns.

Defensively, Hawaii defensive end Elijah Robinson recorded a game-high 11 tackles, including three for loss.

Hawaii will return to host No. 21 Boise State on Oct. 12 at 5 p.m
