South Bend Airport is preparing for a possible visit from President Joe Biden

(This story has been updated to add new information.)

SOUTH BEND — The Tribune’s news partners at WNDU-TV report that the White House has confirmed that President Joe Biden and first lady Jill Biden will visit South Bend on Saturday, Oct. 5.

WNDU reported Friday afternoon that the White House press office confirmed the Bidens will fly to South Bend from Joint Base Andrews in Maryland shortly before 1 p.m. An estimated time of arrival in South Bend was not provided.

The schedule calls for the Bidens to leave South Bend and return to Maryland shortly before 5:30 p.m., WNDU reported.

No further details were released about their visit to South Bend, but as WNDU previously reported, some sources said it would be for a wedding or reception and not a political event.

The Federal Aviation Administration issued a VIP movement alert for South Bend on Wednesday for Saturday and added the city to its calendar Thursday afternoon.

WNDU also reported that multiple sources told the television station that law enforcement officials throughout St. Joseph County are preparing for the visit.

A US Air Force jet landed at South Bend International Airport on Thursday and spent several hours on the tarmac. As WNDU reported, this is consistent with what typically happens before a presidential visit.

Representatives from the South Bend Police Department and St. Joseph County Police referred The Tribune to the White House late Thursday afternoon to investigate the VIP, as requested by Secret Service agents on the scene.

The Tribune has emailed the White House and has not yet received a response.
