Duke Athletics is introducing a lottery for participation in Countdown to Craziness

Duke Athletics announced a lottery system to determine the order of entry for Countdown to Craziness in an email to the Duke community on Wednesday.

In a change from the typical tent system in Krzyzewskiville, undergraduate students who want to register between 7 a.m. and 9 a.m. will be entered into the lottery, as a campout for graduate students is taking place this weekend. Anyone wishing to register after 9 a.m. has the option of gaining entry via the traditional queue rules.

The Line Watchers sent an email Thursday informing the Cameron Crazies that they were not supporting the lottery system because it was “against the spirit” of K-Ville. However, they ensured that this would only be a one-time event and that the regular walk-up line rules would apply for the rest of the season.

K-Ville’s boundaries include Crowell Quad and will expand to include the Card parking lot at 3 p.m

“A lottery system does not mean we exclude anyone from K-Ville or Section 17,” wrote Co-Head Line Monitors Kelvin Bueno Gonzalez and Oliver Hess.

Students will not be able to get in line until 7 a.m. Friday, and line monitors will be at Crowell Quad to record group numbers for the lottery. At least one-third of the group must be within K-Ville boundaries for registration and line-up at 5:00 p.m

The email from Duke Athletics comes after the Headline Monitors sent an email on Monday with a plan to move K-Ville to Crowell Quad. That email made no mention of the lottery, but did list typical rules for wearing wristbands and registering.

The countdown to craziness begins Friday at 7 p.m

This is a developing story and will be updated as more information becomes available.
