What you should know about Pa & Ma’s Backyard BBQ

George and Monica Nelson started Big George’s Backyard BBQ in 1995, selling plates of food for $5 at their Indianapolis home. In 2007, they moved to the former location of Pa & Ma’s BBQ on the Northwest Side and moved several times before returning to the neighborhood in March.

The restaurant sells soul food and grilled items like brisket, fried catfish, candied yams, chicken and dumplings and more in a cafeteria setting. Over time, George and Monica became known simply as “Pa” and “Ma.”

At the end of August, George was shot during an altercation outside the restaurant. He was 56.

The Nelson community quickly rallied behind Pa & Ma’s, which Monica now runs with her daughter Brockelle. Monica said while she is still mourning George’s death, she is ready to carry on his legacy at Pa & Ma’s and is looking forward to watching the “Triple D” episode.

“This is what my husband has been waiting for,” she said.
