Bruins’ Jim Montgomery reveals troubling update on Matthew Poitras

Head coach Jim Montgomery revealed a concerning update about a Bruins forward who fans were hoping would have a breakout season.

Montgomery opened his press conference on Thursday by saying that Matthew Poitras was dealing with an undisclosed injury on a daily basis. The 20-year-old did not play in Boston’s 4-1 preseason win over the Philadelphia Flyers on Tuesday and will not be in the squad for Thursday’s friendly against the Los Angeles Kings in Quebec City.

Brad Marchand withdrew early from Tuesday’s preseason win due to illness and will not be in the squad on Thursday. However, Montgomery noted that the team was just taking precautions with the Bruins’ captaincy.

When asked whether Fabian Lysell’s recall from Providence affected Poitras or Marchand, Montgomery said the plan was always to bring the prospect back after he was left off the training camp roster. Montgomery also indicated that more Providence players would be recalled for Saturday’s preseason finale, likely meaning more starters would have the night off before next Tuesday’s regular-season opener.

Poitras played well in the preseason and looked to be a key player making the opening night roster, which was his stated goal in training camp. The rising forward scored one goal in three games and also had five shots on goal.
