Clairo fans “charmed” at Webster Hall.

Under soft lighting, the melodious sounds of Wendy Rene’s “After Laughter (Comes Tears)” filled the air, accompanied by the applauding crowd eagerly awaiting the performance of indie-pop artist Claire Cottrill, musically known as Clairo.

The forest green studio-inspired set framed the stage where Clairo poured her and her band members red wine and raised her glass to the audience to begin the second night of her sold-out five-night “Charm” residency at Webster Hall in September. 17. The Atlanta-born artist set the stage for a night of connection, community and, most of all, undeniable charm.

Opening act Frankie Cosmos kicked off the evening with his unique sound and wistfully playful lyrics that harmoniously fit Clairo’s soft rock mood and songwriting style. The band’s setlist included their viral hit “Fool,” which had the audience wistfully singing along. With over 300,000 posts on Tik-Tok showcasing the song’s catchy melody and chorus, it was no surprise that the audience reciprocated the band’s enthusiasm for performing the song.

Although the tour was named after the release of her third studio album, Charm, Clairo’s setlist included music from all eras of her journey – from releasing covers on SoundCloud to indie-pop sensation – and showcased her musical evolution through tracks “Immunity.” “, “Sling” and their EP “Diary 001”.

Clairo began the evening with “Nomad,” a song that simultaneously introduces the show and the album “Charm,” followed by a performance of “Second Nature.” As she sang, she smiled into her microphone and swayed back and forth, embodying the song’s essence of loving someone or something so easily.

She later performed “Terrapin,” a song that she described in her conversation with Remi Wolf for Interview Magazine as the first song where she “felt really free in the songwriting process.” Clairo responded to fans’ requests to perform more songs. This led to a special addition to the evening: “Sinking,” a track that hasn’t sonically graced a venue since the album toured in 2019.

Originally a joke from her Los Angeles residency at the Fonda Theater, this humorous and flirtatious atmosphere was cultivated at Webster Hall, where audience members didn’t hesitate to bark at her. “For some reason I feel really sexy, I don’t know why,” she said during a show in LA.

For her New York show, however, she took a different approach; Her wish was that the audience would boo her and her band instead. “Boo, if you think my band is sexy,” she said. Almost immediately, the audience responded with a flurry of playful boos, which were soon replaced by the upbeat rhythm of “Sexy to Someone,” originally released as a single last May. The song served as a taste of what fans could expect from “Charm.”

The energy was a constant force throughout the night, reflecting Clairo’s charisma that radiated to every corner of Webster Hall. With every song, every expression and every interaction with the audience, Clairo seamlessly and naturally created an atmosphere of connection and joy. The wording on their merch leaves no room for doubt – everyone in attendance was certainly “delighted by the Clairo tour.”
