LISTEN: Mets and Brewers radio in on Pete Alonso’s home run in the ninth inning

For three decades Howie Rose has been the voice of some great Mets moments, but now he can add Thursday night’s Game 3 win over the Brewers as one of them.

When Pete Alonso When he came to bat on his 2-0 down, Rose went into turmoil. The Mets had just put runners on the corners with no outs, and Alonso had a chance to do some damage. Even better: The hard-hitting first baseman made the count 3-1 against Brewers closer Devin Williams.

To prevent the bases from being loaded, Williams had to get something across the plate, and he did. Alonso launched an 86 mph changeup the other way over the right field wall to give the Mets the lead they refused to relinquish.

And Rose had the perfect call.

“Swing and a fly ball to right field. Pretty good shot.” (Sal) Frelick back, on the wall. He jumps, it’s gone! He did it! He did it!” said Rose. “Pete Alonso with the most memorable home run of his career.”

As radio fans know, there are usually two sides to every call. Legendary Brewers announcer Bob Uecker was on the phone and his account of events was understandably less than enthusiastic.

“And the pitch, a punch in the air to the right. Low, warning track and gone,” said Uecker. “Peter Alonso just put New York on top in this game with a three-run home run to right field. And so a 2-0 lead has now become a 3-2 deficit. That quickly. Wow.”

The 90-year-old host has had his fair share of great moments, but even he was nearly speechless by Alonso’s blast, which sent the Mets into the NLDS and challenged the Brewers – the NL Central champions – to kick off their offseason.
