The Reds’ new coach, Terry Francona, hires a World Series champion

The Cincinnati Reds have signed a winner in Terry Francona.

Now the front office must give its new manager the players he needs to make the Reds a winner.

It’s hard to give the Reds credit after they made David Bell the scapegoat for years of front office ineptitude. But the Reds scored a major PR win by bringing in Tito, who is coming out of retirement after a break this season.

Terry Francona is the Reds’ best option

The Reds hired the best manager they could have. That’s a rent you can afford. A win-now employment. It’s a big step towards victory. It’s not the final step.

The Reds don’t have enough good players. Team president Nick Krall needs to bring in a run producer this offseason. If it’s necessary to give up on some prospects, then do it. The Reds need to stop falling in love with all these prospects. You need to stop hoarding them. They have enough in the pipeline to get a deal done – and still have a lot in the pipeline.

Francona, who played for the Reds in 1987, is not coming out of retirement to develop a number of young and up-and-coming players and be part of an expanded development process.

Certainly it is still a process to bring together the Reds’ talented core of young players. But Tito is coming here to get the Reds into the playoffs next season and give the franchise its first postseason series since 1995. That is not the ultimate goal.

Francona is coming here looking to win a World Series in the near future.

What is Terry Francona’s plan for the Reds?

Tito is 65 years old and probably doesn’t have a five-year plan to win it all. Francona needs to believe the Reds have enough players for him to play around. He needs to see that he can transform Hunter Greene, Elly De La Cruz, Matt McLain, Spencer Steer and others from good young ballplayers into champions.

Tito is damn good. He has two World Series rings, both with the Boston Red Sox. He led Cleveland to the World Series in 2016. He is the winningest manager in Cleveland franchise history. Francona was named Manager of the Year three times.

Francona is an old-school guy who knows his way around the modern game. He’s good with the media, which is a big deal for the Reds’ front office. He is a great storyteller and is respected throughout baseball. Tito has a good instinct for dealing with experienced and young players. He’s not afraid to hold players accountable, something the front office believes needs to improve after an underperforming 2024 season.

“He’s great with the players,” Guardians pitcher Eli Morgan told Bally Sports Ohio last year. “He stays honest with you. You feel like you can really trust him. He is good to the core. When you play for a good guy, it adds to the trust factor.”

Can the Reds win a World Series with Terry Francona?

Let’s keep the situation Francona finds himself in realistic. Even a World Series champion manager can only do so much. Especially in today’s game, where stats nerds on the front lines demanding analysis, not people, drive many of the decisions on the field. But Tito has the credibility, experience and courage to stand up to the front office when necessary. He has nothing to lose. He already has his rings.

Francona will not tolerate defeat. He is the best manager owner Bob Castellini has hired since he and his partners bought the team nearly two decades ago. We’ll see if ownership gives Francona the resources to bring championship baseball back to Cincinnati.
