Pete Alonso hits a miracle home run in the ninth inning to send the Mets to the NLDS

The New York Mets’ magic carpet ride just ended — but we may just be seeing the Miracle Mets 2.0.

After trailing 2-0 early in the ninth and with two outs to go, New York fought back against Devin Williams to claim a 4-2 victory over the Milwaukee Brewers and advance to the National League Division Series.

Francisco Lindor opened the inning with a walk, and two batters later Brandon Nimmo singled to put runners on the corners – that had been the first hit by a Met other than Lindor that night, as Lindor had gone 2-for-3. but everyone else combined to score 0:24.

That brought up slugger Pete Alonso, who has become public enemy No. 1 in Queens with his subpar (at least by his standards) season. But he made everything right again.

The right-hander threw a pitch to the opposite field that sneaked over the right field wall and gave New York a 3-2 lead, causing a commotion in the dugout and on the basepaths.

Starling Marte added an RBI single for good measure, but it was unnecessary.

With Edwin Diaz throwing part of the seventh and all of the eighth pitch with the Mets behind, the Mets, out of desperation, brought in David Peterson for the save. He immediately allowed a leadoff single to Sal Frelick, who hit Jake Bauers twice in the seventh, but he struck out Joey Ortiz and got Brice Turang into a 6-6-3 double play to give the Mets the series win .

The miraculous victory is déjà vu for the Mets = it comes just three days after the Mets rallied from a 3-0 deficit in Game 8 and 7-6 in Game 9 against the Atlanta Braves in their first game clinching a postseason berth during a doubleheader.

Everything seemed to be going down the drain for the Mets, as after pulling Jose Quintana after six scoreless innings, they allowed back-to-back home runs to start the seventh inning. However, according to OPTA Stats, Alonso’s shot was the first ever made by a Met while trailing in the 9th inning or later of a winner-take-all postseason game.

This is also the first time that both the Mets and New York Yankees have appeared in the Division Series since 2006 – it’s not too early to start thinking about a Subway Series, right?
