Storms possible on the Treasure Coast due to the Gulf system and Kirk

Rain chances are forecast to increase on the Treasure Coast through the weekend, linked to a tropical disturbance in the Gulf of Mexico, while beach hazards such as rip currents and high waves are expected from Hurricane Kirk, which continues to move northeast hundreds of miles east moves coast.

The disturbance in the southwestern Gulf of Mexico could bring rainfall amounts of 3 to 5 inches by the middle of next week, with higher amounts possible in some areas and sporadic thunderstorms possible after Sunday, a meteorologist said.

Hurricane Kirk, a Category 3 storm, is expected to reach the East Coast on Sunday, causing high waves and rough waters, and is expected to turn further northeast over the weekend.

“We don’t want people going out in that 3- to 5-foot surf where there’s a high risk of rip currents,” said National Weather Service meteorologist Jared Heil.

According to the National Hurricane Center, Kirk’s waves are expected to reach the East Coast on Sunday and will likely produce life-threatening surf and rip current conditions.

Dangerous coastal conditions are expected to continue into early next week, along with an increased chance of storms and rain due to the tropical moisture the system is producing in the Gulf, he said.

“One of the biggest concerns heading into Florida early next week,” he said, is “the threat of heavy rain and flooding.”

Several days and rounds of heavy rain are forecast with this system, he said.

Currently classified as a tropical disturbance, there is a 30 percent chance that a tropical depression or even a storm will develop, he said.

A 30-40% chance of storms was forecast for Saturday, while the chance increased to 50-60% for Sunday.

“We forecast a rapid increase in humidity through Sunday,” Heil said.
