Are we setting our clocks back this weekend?

Not quite! It is almost Time to reset the clocks. In just over a month we’ll fall behind.

Despite efforts to resemble Arizona and Hawaii — and not observing daylight saving time in Florida — the centuries-old practice will end in November, the first Sunday after Halloween, for 2024.

Daylight saving time began in March, on the second Sunday of the month, when we set our wall clocks one hour to “Spring Forward.” In November, Daylight Saving Time “ends” and we set our wall clocks back an hour, or “fall back” – unless you live in a state or territory that doesn’t observe Daylight Saving Time.

Probably the biggest complaint about daylight saving time is the disruption to sleep and habits. Those who favor permanently eliminating daylight saving time argue for brighter afternoons and more economic activity.

For years, lawmakers tried to permanently end daylight saving time with the Sunshine Protection Act, introducing bills in 2018, 2019, 2021 and 2023. However, the bills were never passed by the U.S. House of Representatives nor were they ever signed into law.

Below you’ll find things to know about the Sunshine Protection Act, reasons why we still fall back, jump forward, and other facts about daylight saving time.

Daylight saving time became the national standard in 1966 when President Lyndon B. Johnson signed the Uniform Time Act, established as a way to further save energy. The idea was: the longer the lights are out, the less time you need to light your home.
