New love interest for Atwater! “Chicago PD” boss gives the overview

To say that Chicago PDTo say that Officer Kevin Atwater (LaRoyce Hawkins) has been unlucky in love would be an understatement. But it sounds like that could change in Season 12.

The third episode of the season (which premiered September 25) focuses on Atwater. “We saw Atwater as, OK, last season we talked a lot about who he is and how he deals with everything, and so much of him is how empathetic he is, but also how responsible he is.” “Showrunner Gwen Sigan tells TV Insider.

“I almost feel like he didn’t have a choice, that’s how he was raised from a young age and that’s how he had to be,” she continues. “And the nice thing about him is that he wants to be everything for everyone at once and take responsibility. But as we saw last year, there’s burnout and stress in that, and that’s not always sustainable and can affect your mental health and leave you unable to care for yourself.”

That led to Atwater’s plans for Season 12, which include this new love interest. “We wanted to give him some kind of solution or at least something that would make him look at life differently and take a different perspective and maybe have something that’s just for himself and this is something that will help him with that too “You can find your balance.” And that’s what we’re doing in Episode 3,” reveals Sigan. “You meet a new character who loves him very much, and that kind of surprises him and makes him maybe think about life a little differently, and then we’ll see how that affects the rest of the season.” It enables helping him realize that there are different ways to cope and being able to manage his stress and allow himself to take care of both himself and other people.”

We’ll have to wait and see if his scope this season includes becoming a detective. Sigan told us that there’s a promotion coming up for someone in Episode 6. It could really be any of the officers – Atwater, Kim Burgess (Marina Squerciati) and Adam Ruzek (Patrick John Flueger) have held that rank throughout the series – based on their banter. Since the story of a promotion isn’t particularly interesting in itself (the job is the same as we’ve seen over the years at Intelligence), it’s a question of: “How do you turn it into something that really reveals something about who this person is.” “And isn’t just a piece of paper?” she shares.
