Dolphins consider changes after third straight loss

Offensive changes appear to be on the horizon in Miami amid a terrible lull in the Mike McDaniel era.

After the Dolphins’ third straight loss – an ugly 31-12 home loss to the Titans on “Monday Night Football” – coach McDaniel said afterwards: “Everything is on the table” as Miami tries to recover from a 1-3 deficit. Start to recover.

“There was a huge disconnect between preparation and execution,” McDaniel said. “I think there were a variety of contributors, but I need to see the tape.”

Still without starting quarterback Tua Tagovailoa, who remains on injured reserve after suffering a horrific concussion in a loss to the Bills in Week 2, the Dolphins on Monday hired recently signed Tyler Huntley at center after backup Skylar Thompson suffered an injury the previous week had suffered.

The former Ravens quarterback went 14 of 22 for 96 yards and lost a fumble.

Huntley later explained he had to focus on “being on time” with guys like explosive wideouts Jaylen Waddle and Tyreek Hill, whose frustrations boiled over on the sidelines Monday.

McDaniel, now in his third season in Miami – where he has gone 3-1 in back-to-back seasons – added Monday that despite the efforts made elsewhere, the reality is that the team is “not even close to good enough.” .

“The bottom line is it doesn’t matter what we do behind the scenes. It’s not nearly good enough on the field, so you just have to go back to the drawing board and be very critical,” he said.

The Dolphins gained 184 yards of offense on Monday and converted just two of 12 third downs.

They scored their first touchdown in the fourth quarter.

Full-back Alec Ingold said responsibility for the offensive problems lay with the unit as a whole.

“The quarterback is obviously a very important piece of this puzzle, but we need 10 more guys to perform and execute,” said Ingold, a 2023 Pro Bowler.

“It’s a performance-based company that we’re all involved in, so I think it’s more than fair, and I think that’s where you know we’re doing the same thing internally.” And shying away from it because you’re not getting the results, I think I’m idiotic, and I think we have to attack that; We have to embrace this uncomfortable moment to see what kind of team we are and what kind of people we are.”

The Dolphins next visit the Patriots (1-3) on Sunday.
