Jared Goff and Jahmyr Gibbs lead the offensive outburst

The Detroit Lions exorcised the demons of years past with a prime-time victory over the Seattle Seahawks.

Detroit’s offense was in full swing en route to a season-high point total. In the end, the Lions defeated Seattle 42-29, celebrating their first victory over the NFC West’s nemesis since 2012.

Here are facts and facts about Detroit’s win over Seattle

STUDY: QB Jared Goff

Goff had a literally perfect performance when it came to finishing, finishing 18 of 18, which was the most in NFL history without an incompletion. He also became the first player in league history to finish the game with at least 200 passing yards and a receiving touchdown.

The veteran quarterback caught a pass from Amon-Ra St. Brown on a trick play in the third quarter, marking the first touchdown of his career. Although he recorded three sacks, including a potentially costly safety, it was mostly an excellent performance for Goff.

DUD: CB Terrion Arnold

Arnold was penalized three more times in Monday’s win, and his penchant for being smart with opposing receivers has become somewhat concerning. Arnold has now been penalized nine times in four games.

He still had his moments as a run defender on Monday, and the transition from the college level to facing some of the league’s best wideouts in four weeks was never going to be easy.

However, Arnold still has a hard time keeping his hands off the receivers. He wasn’t alone in his penalty woes, as fellow cornerback Carlton Davis was also penalized three times, including twice for pass interference.

STUDY: WR Jameson Williams

Williams only had two catches, but both counted. After a 10-yard catch to start the game, Williams provided his big moment with a 70-yard touchdown catch in the third quarter. On the play, he caught a cross route that was blocked by Amon-Ra St. Brown with a deep route on the opposite side of the field.

The Alabama product created enough distance that he was able to high-step the final 30 yards or so into the end zone. Williams then threw the ball through the goal post in tribute to Calvin Johnson, who was inducted into the team’s “Pride of the Lions” at halftime.

In addition to his accomplishments as a pass catcher, Williams was also praised by Dan Campbell for his performance as a blocker in the run game.

DUD: DE James Houston

With Marcus Davenport and Derrick Barnes both on injured reserve, Monday’s game presented an opportunity for Houston to carve out a larger role. However, he made a small impression and was notable for being penalized twice.

Houston was offside twice. He didn’t record a tackle, but did put pressure on Geno Smith with a snap. The Lions sacked Geno Smith three times, with Levi Onwuzurike and Alim McNeill scoring once, DJ Reader scoring another, and linebacker Malcolm Rodriguez scoring the other.

STUDY: LB Jack Campbell

Campbell made a big play early in Monday’s game. After the Lions took a 7-0 lead, Seattle tried to tie the game. However, Campbell changed those plans by knocking the ball loose from Seahawks receiver DK Metcalf.

Campbell forced the fumble, which was recovered by Carlton Davis and returned deep into Seattle territory. The Lions converted and made the score 14-0 three plays later.

The Iowa product finished with seven tackles, including one for a loss.

STUDY: RB David Montgomery

Montgomery wasn’t Detroit’s leading rusher, but he had several big moments. On the second series, he got the offense going, starting with an 11-yard run and ending with a 1-yard plunge into the end zone.

However, the decisive moment of the evening came in the third quarter. After taking a short pass from Goff in the flat, he threw a shoulder into cornerback Devon Witherspoon, evading several tackles and rushing for a 40-yard gain, his longest reception of the season.

Stud: S. Kerby Joseph

Joseph rushed down a safety and kicked upfield with great speed. He continued his solid play, starting the 2024 season with a team-best nine tackles, including one for loss.

The Illinois player recorded his third interception of the season by picking off Smith in the end zone on Seattle’s final drive. He also had a tackle for loss after Jack Campbell got Kenneth Walker to bounce his run outside the tackles and he was able to fill the lane.

STUDY: RB Jahmyr Gibbs

While Montgomery had the big climax, Gibbs maintained a constant presence on site. He finished with a team-best 78 rushing yards and two touchdowns on 14 carries.

The Alabama product had scoring runs of three and one yard. He also had a 20-yard run to set up Detroit’s first touchdown of the game.
