IND vs. BDESH 2024/25, IND vs. BAN 2nd test match report, September 27th – October 1st, 2024

Lunch Bangladesh Set at 233 and 146 (Shadman 50, Bumrah 3-17, Jadeja 3-34, Ashwin 3-50). India 285 for 9 decl 95 runs to win

Barely 24 hours after his 300th Test wicket and just two sessions after India’s batters launched an almost unthinkable push for victory, Ravindra Jadeja’s triple strike sparked a relegation for Bangladesh, who reached eight in a sprawling first session on the final day Wickets wiped out . Bangladesh started the day at 26 for 2 and were bowled out for 146, setting India a target of 95 as Jadeja, R Ashwin and Jasprit Bumrah scored three each. Jadeja broke a stubborn stand of 55 between Najmul Hossain Shanto and Shadman Islam that gave the visitors hope of putting some pressure back on the hosts, and the rest of the Indian bowlers pounced too.

After Jadeja dismissed Shanto with his second ball, Akash Deep caught the well-placed Shadman at gully before Jadeja cheaply sent back Litton Das and Shakib Al Hasan to reduce them from 91 for 3 to 94 for 7. There were no demons on the field, no vicious turn, just tight and slippery bowling from Jadeja and the mounting pressure led to Bangladesh’s demise.

Bangladesh were 26 behind at the start of the day’s 98 overs and it was Ashwin who struck early. An unbeaten century in the first innings was peppered with impressive sweeps, but the same stroke led to Mominul Haque’s downfall as he swept Ashwin straight to leg slip for 2. Bumrah and Ashwin kept Shanto and Shadman on a leash before the latter began his streak of boundaries against the offspinner. He had already collected three fours in the early overs before unleashing three confident cover drives against Ashwin and a back-foot cut for four fours in seven balls, giving Bangladesh the lead.

When Mohammed Siraj replaced Bumrah, who was only used for a short time in the series, his loose balls hit a few more boundaries and Bangladesh looked confident of extending their lead. He was beaten to two fours each by Shadman and Shanto in his opening game, although one of them was a possible chance, but there was no third slip.

It is possible that Jadeja was the last to get the ball because there were only left-handed players in the goal area until he was substituted. And he only needed two balls to bat. Shanto lost his leg stump when he missed a reverse sweep on his first ball against Jadeja, and in his next over Jadeja gained extra lift on a pitch that was kept slightly low, leaving Litton 1 behind. Between these two overs, Akash Deep bowled Shadman just after the half-century and the push to gully ended his 101-ball stay. Jadeja was now traveling all over Bangladesh. In his third over, he sent Shakib back with an innocuous delivery that went slowly through the air and Shakib only hit it back to give Jadeja a record of 2.2-1-3-3 early in his game.

Down seven for 94, Rohit Sharma brought Bumrah back and the spearhead rewarded him by wiping out the tail. His third ball in this refresher period was a beauty that gave Mehidy Hasan Miraz a late lead. It was only Mushfiqur Rahim who stopped the visitors from going all out and extended the lead to 100. He used the straight bat confidently against Akash Deep and Bumrah and even belted two consecutive fours against Jadeja with the help of a reverse sweep and an inside-out drive.

But he was running out of partners. Bumrah persuaded Taijul Islam lbw to extend the first session in time for lunch, despite Mushfiqur and Khaled Ahmed frustrating her. Mushfiqur started the strike when India opted for two lbw reviews – one each to Mushfiqur and Khaled – without the spinners, but in both cases the ball tracking showed the ball going over the wicket. Ashwin even tried a googly at one point in search of the final wicket, but again it was Bumrah who gave them success. Returning for the final over before lunch, a slow offcutter bowling at 125km/h got a big hit from Mushfiqur on the last ball of the session as he squandered all the hard work with Khaled in the extended half hour.
