49ers News: Christian McCaffrey has Achilles tendonitis in both legs

ESPN’s Adam Schefter joined us on his weekly podcast appearance for The Pat McAfee Show and shared some thoughts on the San Francisco 49ers’ injuries:

“Here’s something that I think is going to be a little bit problematic for this team going forward. Yesterday Fred Warner left the game with an ankle injury. He didn’t finish the game. And if a player doesn’t finish the game with an ankle injury, that could be an indication that his status for the upcoming game is in jeopardy.

I think they’re hoping he’s back. Last week they lost Javon Hargrave. His replacement, Jordan Elliott, suffered a knee injury yesterday. Fred Warner injures his ankle. These are serious setbacks for this team. Hopefully Fred Warner won’t miss a long period of time.

With this team, they will continue to be put under pressure and that has been the case all season long.”

Head coach Kyle Shanahan speaks Monday at 3:30 p.m. PT. He should have the results of Warner’s MRI and be informed if there are any new injuries to report.

Schefter also shared if there was a timeline for Christian McCaffrey:

“I think here’s the truth. I don’t think Christian McCaffrey knows when he’ll be back. I don’t think the 49ers know when he’ll be back. I don’t think anyone knows when he’ll be back at the moment.

Now they’ve spoken and said they’re going to step up Christian McCaffrey, possibly even this week, to get him back in and see how he’s doing. Ideally, you would assume that he is feeling better and that the time off would be helpful. But who knows how his calf and Achilles will react? Nobody can say for sure.

Now I think their minds aren’t thinking about the season at all. It was brought up to Kyle Shanahan last week, and he scoffed at the idea. The thought of it never occurred to you. Of course I would say it should happen because you don’t know when he’s coming back. Again, the hope is that the pain will subside when he returns to the training pitch this week. That the treatment he received in Germany, whatever it was, worked and that the information has calmed down, that he is getting better and that they will bring him back here in the coming weeks.

Nobody, nobody knows whether that will happen or not.”

There you have it. It’s unlikely Shanahan will learn anything new about McCaffrey. Nobody knows, as Schefter put it.

According to NBC Sports Bay Area’s Matt Maiocco, McCaffrey has Achilles tendonitis in both legs: “He has bilateral Achilles tendonitis, which means he has it in both legs.”

This explains why no one has any idea about McCaffrey’s return.
