Reported outages continue to slow

It’s been more than four hours since the first reports of Verizon outages began, and the number is still slowly decreasing. According to Downdetector, a total of 49,730 outages have been reported as of 2:01 p.m. ET, a steady decline. Verizon continues to investigate the cause of the outage and is actively seeking a solution to restore service.

Over 2,600 responses to Verizon on X

Apparently, customers are expressing concern about Verizon’s ongoing outage. In fact, there have already been over 2,900 replies to Verizon’s post on X. Many of those responding are still saying they are unable to make calls.

On Verizon’s network status page, the company says it is aware of the ongoing disruption in wireless service affecting some customers. There is no investigation yet into the exact cause of the outage, but the company says network engineers are working to quickly identify and resolve the issue.

The outage has been around three hours and while the Down Detector chart appears to be trending downward, the number of outage reports is still high. From Northern California, Philip Michaels confirms that he still cannot make calls over Verizon’s network.

Philip Michaels, our senior mobile editor, uses Verizon for his wireless service, and he’s also experiencing the outage at his home base outside of San Francisco. When you try to make a call, the phone immediately displays the “Call ended” screen (see image above) without even ringing.

Reports of outages are decreasing

More than two hours after the initial flood of outage reports from Verizon customers, it appears that they have been decreasing since 12:00 p.m. ET. It peaked at 11:13 a.m. ET with 104,932 outages reported, but has been declining since then. Last reported at 11:59 a.m. ET, about 75,000 outages were reported, according to Downdetector.

Reported outages are increasing in Los Angeles

Although there were not as many reports as other cities, Los Angeles quickly experienced a significant number of outages from Verizon customers – there have been over 3,000 reports in the last hour and counting, according to Downdetector.

Verizon customers experiencing issues with their devices this morning are reporting their experiences so far on social media using the hashtag #VerizonOutage. On X (formerly Twitter), many customers are still reporting that their devices are stuck in SOS mode. Meanwhile, the same reports are published in threads.

We’ve reached out to Verizon for comment on the situation. According to a Verizon spokesperson, “We are aware of an issue affecting service for some customers. Our engineers are dedicated and we are working quickly to identify and resolve the issue.”

The most outages were reported in Chicago, Phoenix and Denver

Chicago, Phoenix, Denver, Indianapolis, Cincinnati, Omaha, Minneapolis, Columbus and Seattle round out the top locations with the most Verizon outage reports, according to Downdetector

The outages reported by AT&T are beginning to increase

Meanwhile, competitor AT&T is also seeing a similar increase in reported outages. While this number is nowhere near the value reported by Verizon customers, it already exceeds more than 1,000 reports, according to Downdetector.

Over 100,000 reported outages at Verizon

It’s been more than an hour since the first reports of customer issues with Verizon, but the number is now over 100,000 reports, according to service tracker Downdetector.

While Verizon customers are reporting outages, Visible doesn’t appear to be affected at all. Downdetector can also verify this as the number of outages reported by Visible customers is small. This is interesting because Visible uses Verizon’s network.

So far, customers reporting problems with Verizon tend to only come from the East Coast, with New York City and Washington DC having the most. There is now a huge increase in the Midwest.

Tracking website Downdetector is seeing a sharp spike this morning due to an outage at Verizon. Before 10:00 a.m. ET, service appeared to be normal, but now there are more and more people reporting problems.
