Longshoremen on the East Coast are on the brink of a strike for the first time in 47 years

The International Longshoremen’s Association is preparing for what could be the first major port strike on the East Coast since 1977, when the United States’ Atlantic ports were blocked for seven weeks.

If a contract with the United States Maritime Alliance (USMX) is not signed by the end of Monday, Every major U.S. port from Maine to the Texas Gulf Coast could close as more than 45,000 union workers picket at ports that handle about half of the goods that come to America by sea.

North Carolina residents watched as the floods swept away cars and buildings

As Helene struck western North Carolina, Asheville residents were heartbroken as they watched the floodwaters lift up cars, trucks, billboards and homes.
