Tom Brady’s LFG Player of the Game for Week 4: Buccaneers QB Baker Mayfield

For every game it broadcasts during the 2024 NFL season, leading up to Super Bowl LIX, under FOX Sports NFL analyst Tom Brady chooses an outstanding star as his LFG Player of the Match.

In Week 4, that honor went to the man who succeeded him as the Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ starting quarterback – Baker Mayfield. The former No. 1 overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft orchestrated a 33-16 win over the Philadelphia Eagles in front of Brady on Sunday. Mayfield completed 30 of his 47 pass attempts for 347 yards and two touchdowns and also added a touchdown run on fourth-and-goal. Watch Brady’s full conversation with Mayfield here:

Brady regularly praises Buccaneers wide receiver Mike Evans and often recalls how much he enjoyed throwing passes to Evans during their time as teammates. Brady said early in the game that it was important for Mayfield to immediately target Evans, and that’s exactly what Mayfield did, connecting with the five-time Pro Bowler on the Buccaneers’ first offensive play of the game. Evans finished the game with eight catches for 94 yards and a touchdown.

“He looked great,” Mayfield told Brady. “As hot as it was today (on the field), the guys take turns, but Mike, as you know, is a guy. So yeah, I’m just trying to get him going early. We didn’t do that last week.” We realized we had to do it.

Mayfield and the Buccaneers also knew the importance of starting fast on offense against the Eagles’ ferocious defensive line, which Brady said before the game was key to success for both teams.

“Knowing the big guys they have up front, (our plan was) to get the ball out early, let our guys make plays in space and see what tackles we can break,” Mayfield said. “And the boys were engrossed in the plan. We are aware of the details. And that’s why we started so quickly.”

Brady was also impressed by the Buccaneers’ new offensive coordinator Liam Coen, who already had a relationship with Mayfield when both played with the Los Angeles Rams in 2022. The two appear to be a perfect fit heading into the 2024 season, as Mayfield has a 74.4 completion percentage. 637 passes and six touchdowns in his first four games.

“I love Liam,” Mayfield said. “We have a very good relationship, just communication back and forth. He was involved today because he just understood the strengths of their defense and how we need to attack them, I thought all day. “We didn’t make enough plays” for him. Should have been more efficient.

Although he lambasted Mayfield early in the game for some recent comments that appeared to be a veiled assessment of Brady’s time in Tampa Bay, Brady praised Mayfield’s leadership throughout Sunday’s game. And in true Brady style, Mayfield is already looking forward to the Buccaneers’ next game – Thursday night at the NFC South rival Atlanta Falcons.

“We had a short week and a division opponent that was on the road on a Thursday,” Mayfield said. “So for us, continue to be efficient on offense, stick to the plan, start fast and let our defense apply the pressure.”
